I took my kids to school got there put my car in park to let them out then tried to put it back in drive and it reversed so I put in back in park and did the same thing and still was in reverse so I shifted threw all the gears but they all made it reverse the only thing that would work was when I put it in park so I had it towed to the house and I checked the fueses they were good from what I could tell with the bigger relayes and I checked the linkage my shifter is on steering wheel pulled cover off checked linkage there looked good and under hood at shifter and it also looked OK from what I saw another thing is that the outline around the gear that the car is in my car stopped showing the outline of any gear it has a digital dash
My car has 240000 miles.

Check to be sure that the manual lever on the top of the transmission actually moves into each "detent" position, beginning with the park position, as you move the gear shifter. In all likelihood, the manual lever is not moving, due to a broken shift cable. If it is moving, that means the cause of the problem is in the valve body because it is that manual lever, operating via the shift cable, that operates the valves in the valve body to initially select the gear position. To have this inspected, the recommended service to request is a failure to shift into drive diagnostic. If you request that service, the responding certified mechanic will get this diagnosed and resolved, right at your location.
