Hi, Jim, I hope you are well. The voltage only reading 11.3 volts when running suggests that the alternator is failing and not maintaining the voltage level required to keep the battery topped up and all the electrical systems working

I drove the car Friday with no issues. It was dead Saturday morning. I tried to jump it but it wouldn't take. I put the new battery in Saturday. I just put the alternator that's installed last July. I've had bad alternators and never have had half of the things not workingThey fully worked or barely worked. Never had where they don't work at all
Automotive Expert
so as the voltage drops off it will lead to the issues you have not uncommon to fail in the way you have. you need to rectify the charging voltage issue first .should be seeing around 14 volts with the engine running

Ok. So install a new alternator and take it from there if that doesn't resolve the issue
Automotive Expert
i would certainly get the alternator off and have it bench tested but i believe it will solve the issues

I tested the battery with the car running and checked it from negative battery post and alternator and was still 11.3. Battery was 11.3 as well with the car off
Automotive Expert
so there is no output from the alternator at all.it should read around 14 volts

When I connected tester from negative battery post and positive to the alternator it was 11.3v
Automotive Expert
yeah this is just the battery voltage if you leave it running it will just keep dropping until the battery is depleted

Closest place for bench test is 215 miles away. I guess just buy a new one and drop it in and hopefully that will solve the issueOk
Automotive Expert
keep me posted

I can contact you here later if that doesn't resolve the issue?
Automotive Expert
of course

Ok, thank you
Automotive Expert
your very welcome

Been Googling and came across sulfated battery. Is it possible that's the problem. Not sure how long the auto parts store had it before I bought it
Automotive Expert
this wouldn't cause the charging voltage to drop

Ok, thanks
Automotive Expert
no problem

I have new alternator and battery. Still the same issues of many things not working

What others are asking

How do you use the USB port?
If your car is equipped with a USB port (not all Fusions have them, so check to make sure yours is so equipped), you have the ability to connect a wide range of devices to your radio, including flash sticks,...
No fire when starting my car
Hey There: Sorry to hear about the problem you're experiencing with your 97' Pontiac Firebird. What you're describing actually happened to an acquaintance of mine last year. He tried every trick in the book, including the "gas in the spray...
I need to know the diagnostic procedure for dtc p0717. Want to test wires before taking out transmission
If the sensor only has two wires, it is a reluctant AC sensor. If the sensor has three wires then it is a hall effect DC sensor. A two wire sensor will produce a sine wave signal: '()(-)()(-)(_)' or steady...
Cost of Maintenance after 5 years
This is not an easy question to answer for you since unforeseen component failures can cost thousands of dollars. Some of these major repairs could be a transmission or engine replace or repairs. Between now (106000 miles) and 200000 miles...
I replace my crank shaft sensor, but it still not working and I've checked the connector. I think it has no power or ground. How do I fix it?
Hello. It sounds like you are saying that the car is starting but dying when you try to pull away. If the car is starting and idling, then the crank position sensor (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/crankshaft-position-sensor-replacement) is probably alright. Usually a malfunctioning sensor...
When installing a new water pump and thermostat on my 1989 Pontiac grand Prix should I use gasket sealer or silicone grease
In your application, the new thermostat comes with a new rubber seal which is the entire gasketing solution for the thermostat housing. Nothing should be added as that may interfere with the seal. The water pump uses a paper/fiber gasket....
The entire car shakes while driving
Vibrations, or shudders, felt while driving indicate the need for a detailed under-car inspection. The sources can vary widely. Some possibilities include: tire imbalance, tread separation, loose lug nuts, bent wheel(s). Worn/damaged/loose steering and suspension components can cause vibrations as...
PO402 Excessive gas recirculation code
Hi there - while a cracked exhaust tube of any sort is a problem that needs to be addressed, I don't think it's related to your P0402 code. P0402 (https://www.yourmechanic.com/question/how-to-fix-or-figure-out-exhaust-system-leak-code-p0402-by-mushtaq-m) indicates excess exhaust flow into the intake - probably caused...
What causes Nissan Sentra 06 not to drive in D or Reverse but will in 1st and 2nd Gear .?
Hi there. Most transmission problems are due to either low fluid levels or dirty transmission fluid and debris inside the hydraulic lines, creating an obstruction and difficulty shifting gears. However, when you have an issue like you've described, it's more...
