I have a 2012 Hyundai [Sonata](/topics-sonata/) 154k miles. It ran low on oil and light came on. Gave oil before driving again and light went off, took and got an oil change. Two days later(pretty much next time driving though) drove for about 45 minutes and was at a standstill with road construction. Started noticing what seemed like a little shaking and noise while idling but nothing too loud or bad. Then when was finally able to drive the car made a bad loud noises and shaking. I was forced to drive about a mile like this going 30 mph max due to being in one lane traffic from construction and having nowhere to pull off. Any idea what could have caused this or what it is rather? The check engine light is not on again so no way to check the code and the oil level was still good. Also the temp gauge never went up. This is the first issue I’ve had with my sonata in 8 years. Mechanic's Assistant: Does the light stay on, or does it blink? It isn’t on at all. Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Sonata yourself? What have you tried so far? I plan on it. Nothing but considering maybe the oil pump? Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the Mechanic to know before I connect you? Any help is greatly appreciated!

Also the shaking isn’t overly excessive but is there. The noise is worse than the shaking and gets quieter when idling. It also seemed less severe when backing up to the trailer.

Hi and welcome to Just Answer! My name is \*\*\*\*\* \*\*\*\*\* I will be the expert to assist you today. I’m sorry you’re having trouble with your vehicle; I know how frustrating it can be. Please understand I do not know your level of automotive expertise so I may need to ask questions to find out information in order to provide the best possible service and solution. There are times when it may take me a moment to respond because I may have to look up information about your concern. I appreciate your patience. You mention the noise gets quieter at Idle, do you have access to a Hyundai compatible Scan Tool? Also is the vehicle a Turbo Charged Engine or Naturally Aspirated?

I have very little car knowledge. It is a gls so I believe naturally aspirated. I do not have a scan tool. I will look into finding one.I may have a scan tool that works but the check engine light is not on.

OK there are several things that can cause the concern you're having. The engine in your vehicle uses a "Balance Shaft" to smooth the engine pulses. Running an engine low on oil can cause issues with the Engine's Rod Bearings, Main Bearings (Main Bearings do not make noise, they cause a loss of oil pressure that results in noise from other components) and the Valve Train all of which can cause a Rough Idle and Engine noise. The purpose in the Scan Tool is to "Short or Kill" Each Cylinder one at a time. If the noise goes away when the Cylinder is off then it is a "Lower End" noise (Rod Bearings, Pistons or Piston Pins). If the noise does not go away when the Cylinder is shorted then it is most likely an issue in the Valve Train. Did you buy the vehicle new? how many miles are on it? Hyundai has several Engine Recalls and a 10 year 120 K mile Warranty. If you are below those thresholds then your local Hyundai dealer may repair it for free. I'd suggest you call the local dealer with your Vehicle ID number handy and see if the recalls apply to your car.

Ok thank you I will see if any recalls apply. It has 154k miles on it and I've had it since 2012 but was bought used off lease.

Don't buy a Scan Tool. If you're able to get to a reputable parts store they may do the check for you for free. Try calling AutoZone, O'Reilly's or NAPA and ask if they will do it for you. It will save you time and money.

Ok I will try that too. Thank you! Do you think possibly an oil pump issue?

I'd also try calling Hyundai customer service as you're slightly over the mileage for warranty. In today's automotive environment most manufacturers are willing to help. I wish you the best with the repairs. Please update me with the results. Have a great rest of your day and a safe and prosperous new year!
