I have 2009 hyundai sonota 3.3lL and my trans overheated and started leaking fluid badly and would only stay in 3rd and reverse. I added fluid and got my full range of gears back long enough to make in home which was 5 min away. Later I checked and fluid was leaking again and car would hardly move.
Mechanic's Assistant: What is the color and consistency of the fluid? And where exactly are you finding it?
Color was very dark and felt gravely. Seemed to be leaking right under trans. Hard to tell because it had sprayed all over. I sprayed degreaser and wiped as much as i could. I have removed most components above so I could see if it was leaking from above and nothing. Also It does not seem to be leaking from the trans fluid pan. Im getting the po735 code on my scanner. Possibly the torque convertor? Im not looking to replace the trans since the car is not worth the cost of a rebuilt. I just want to see if I can fix it or scrap the car
Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your [Sonata](/topics-sonata/) yourself? What have you tried so far?
Im attempting to try and fix it, but not familiar with transmissions. So far i have just been inspecting to find leak.

I was trying to get the car unstuck from a snow drift so i was shifting between drive and reverse a lot and my tire. I then saw a lot of smoke and could smell it burning. When i got car out and backed into my garage I noticed a large pool of fluid underneath. Thats when I lost all gears expect 3rd and reverse until i added a quart of fluid which temp gave me back all gears

that could have just overheated it , is it still leaking once you filled it back up ?

Its hard to tell. Im also throwing the po735 code which I know is just a general code so im trying to determine if I may need a rebuilt or I can fix. The car is not worth the money to rebuildit leaked out the next day as well when i added more fluid, but not as much

Currently i have a lot removed because i also blew a [radiator](/topics-radiator-hyundai/) hose and did not get new ones yet. I have to put them on and fill the radiator. I took most of the components out to visualize the top of the trans, cooler lines and trans pan. I did not see evidence it was leaking from any of those areas

that code is for 5th gear incorrect ratio ,
usually those codes indicate an internal problem that would require an overhaul

Would i be able to tell more by removing the trans fluid pan to see if there is any metal?

If you do that then you are just confirming that its bad , you wont be able to fix anything from in there

I had noticed some slippage previous to this for the past few months as well, but no leaking and fluid level was ok

Its easy to overheat and mess up the transmission in snow
Still not sure what you need?
Have a certified mobile mechanic diagnose what's wrong with your car, at your home or office.
The only sensor that will cause the RPM gauge to read incorrectly and cause a rough running engine is the crankshaft position sensor (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/symptoms-of-a-bad-or-failing-crankshaft-position-sensor), or its wiring and connector. Try and disconnect the crankshaft sensor connector located above the oil...
If the issue began after you replaced the wiring I would double check the wiring for any faults (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/electrical-components-are-not-working-inspection). A continuity test would be the best way to make sure that the connections are secure and making proper contact. If...

Hi there - a car that sputters may have an ignition misfire (https://www.yourmechanic.com/question/misfire-in-engine), or a fuel supply issue (https://www.yourmechanic.com/question/fuel-pressure-low) causing this behavior. You mentioned the Check Engine Light (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/check-engine-light-is-on-inspection) is on - getting the problem codes is task #1. The...
To estimate a variety of leaks please request a leak inspection/diagnostic (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/oil-fluid-leak-inspection). Most of the cost involved is likely to be labor, though, and consequently a mobile service such as YourMechanic (https://www.yourmechanic.com) will be ideal for you as none of...
