I have a clicking/popping noise from the front wheel area when doing u turns or slow speed turns. It doesn’t do it when parking or going slow.
Mechanic's Assistant: Do you have power steering? Have you checked the power steering fluid?
Yes
Mechanic's Assistant: What is the make/model/year of your car?
2011 Honda [Odyssey](/topics-odyssey/)
Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Odyssey yourself? What have you tried so far?
I haven’t done anything yet. Thought it may be the struts but thought if that was the case it would pop no matter the speed and even when stopped and turning the wheel

Is it a single pop or does it pop in a rhythm pattern?

My name is\*\*\*\*\* seems to be in a pattern. Just can't figure out exactly what it is since it's only on sharp U turns or briefly on other turns at 15-25 mph

Welcome Scott. If its a rhythmic clicking its going to be a outer [CV joint](/topics-cv-joint-honda/) noise. We see this in these sometimes. You can guy aftermarket Axles fairly cheaply and they are not hard to replace.

I initially was thinking that but was second guessing since it was not with all turns. I thought cv joints would make the pop on all turns

They can be intermittent. Sometime only when cold and sometimes only intermittently. They can be inconsistent when they first start to go out. It will happen more as time goes on.

Ok. The other issue I am having is a hum noise coming from the pulley area of the engine. It does it intermittently when first accelerating and intermittently when coasting and beginning to accelerate again.

Most likely this is going to be the drive belt tensioner. They wear and can vibrate under certain conditions. You can usually raise the rpm slowly and get them to start making noise and then change the tension on the belt to see if the noise changes.

Ok. And on a 1-10 scale 1 being easy and 10 being hard how would you rate the axle replacement and the tensioner?

Automotive Expert
Its about a 6 not really that easy. It is tight and the center bolt is a pain to get started sometimes. And the belt tension requires a pretty long wrench or belt tool to relive the tension. The book labor time is 1.0 hour and it takes about that long.

Ok and what about the axle replacement for the Cv joints?

The axle is hard to do without a hoist and a strong impact wrench. Its about an 8.

Ok. Any suggestions on getting this done at a reasonable price and a ballpark cost for each. Would need to get both front axles and the tensioner most likely.

The axles can be bought for about $200 each and labor should be about $425 for both. The tensioner is about $180 and labor should be about $130. Any local shop should be able to do these for you. There is nothing special needed.

Ok the one is definitely an axle noise. The other does sound like a tensioner or possibly a alternator bearing. The hum will need to be hands on unfortunately. Too hard to tell without actually being at the engine.

Ok. I was looking up the repairs and it seems if you do the tensioner they suggest the idler pulley and new drive belt. What are your thoughts on that?

The tensioner comes with the pulleys attached . And yes I change the belt at the same time

Ok. And what are your feelings on aftermarket for axle and tensioner parts? Any brands to look for?
