Hi I have a 2009 Honda Accord V6. My check engine and VSA warning lights are on. The car will accelerate over 60 mph but seems to “jerk” a little when doing so. Some codes that appeared were 61-1, 83-1, and P0369. Any insight? Mechanic's Assistant: Does the light stay on, or does it blink? Just stays on Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Accord yourself? What have you tried so far? Today I got an oil change and got the cabin filters replaced Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the Mechanic to know before I connect you? For the past few weeks the lights will come on and then go off sooner or later. However, the two lights have remained on for the past two days now.

Hello, my name is \*\*\*\*\* \*\*\*\*\* I’d be happy to assist you with your question. **The website may automatically prompt a phone call. This is an auto-generated service, not a direct request from me.** The check engine light is for your camshaft position sensor. Either the sensor has failed or it could have fluid leaking into the connections causing an interrupted signal. The VSA light usually emits when there is an issue with the check engine light system because all the computers "talk" to each other and rely on certain signals from each module. The 61-1 and 83-1 are from the VSA system pretty much saying, "hey there's a problem over in the engine computer system". The camshaft position sensor will have to be visually checked and tested. There is a pulse plate that the sensor reads which also may need to be inspected for damage. The sensor issue could very well cause the jerk feeling you have as well.

Thank you so much. You've articulated this very well!

Will do. Thanks!

Can you explain a bit more about what the camshaft sensor does for the car?
Automotive Expert
Sure, and thanks for your patience on my response. The camshaft position sensor is one of the important speed sensors on the engine which the computer uses along with the crankshaft position sensor to calculate proper ignition and fuel injection timing. I'd say the crankshaft sensor is a little bit more important than the camshaft sensor. If the camshaft sensor fails the computer usually can go into what's referred to as a limp mode or fail safe programming to still allow the engine to run without proper camshaft signal. the computer also uses the camshaft position signal to initiate proper variable timing control of the camshafts. There's a plate behind the cam gear that spins with the cam and the sensor picks up the position of the plate using a magnetic type sensor signal.

Thank you!

Not all the teeth need to be present in order for the pulleys to turn. However, the only way to tell if the cam and crankshaft were really in the right position relative to one another is to line them...
