Hey there... I have a 2012 Ford Explorer.. the [engine](/topics-engine-ford/) shakes violently when I put it into either reverse or drive (no shake in park or neutral)
Mechanic's Assistant: How many miles are on the Ford? Is it an automatic or a manual [transmission](/topics-transmission-ford/)?
100K miles, automatic
Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Explorer yourself? What have you tried so far?
Replaced the transmission mount and the [spark plugs](/topics-spark-plug-ford/)
Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the Mechanic to know before I connect you?
It's only at idle.. once you start driving the shake goes away

Hello
Thanks a lot for the question,
You need to connect the OBDII connector to the scanner and read the fault codes.
If you don't have a scanner, you can try and do the following:
Press and hold the reset button for the odometer.
Turn the key on to accessory.
Keep holding the button until the words TEST appear.
Once the words TEST appear let go of the odometer button and press it again to cycle through the onboard test.
Push the button to dtc which will give an error codes.
Thanks!

OK, in that case if the vibration is too high, I wouldn't touch anything. I would recommend to revise the motor belts, but nothing else.
You may also consider replacing the rubbeer motor support that prevents the vibration of the motor traspasing to the body of the vehicle.

what does "revise the motor belts" mean?also, if it were the motor mount, it should shake more than just at idle, right?

It will vibrate at any given RPM, however some specific RPM may cause resonance in the motor compartment. It may happend at IDLE or at any specific RPM value.

If you have to remove the PCV valve (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/positive-crankcase-ventilation-pcv-valve-replacement) to make the vehicle operate correctly, then there is an issue with the combustion in the engine. If your catalyst is bad then I would suggest replacing it first and then clear codes and see how engine runs afterwards and if it needs further diagnosis.
Hi Taheem. Thanks for contacting us today. It depends on what you mean by "jerking". If the car is pulling to one side while braking, this could indicate a bad caliper, worn brake pads, faulty wheel bearing or even tire...
