Will the engine start and then die or just crank over but not start? When it starts how long does it run for?

Oh I don't know a whole bunch about vehicles just the basics. It will sometimes start and then die and sometimes won't even start.I got it to start today and it sounded horrible and then died instantly and the check engine light was flashing and the oil light came on.A friend of mine sprayed carb cleaner and either in the front of the engine yesterday and thats when it started doing that. In the throttle body.

So it stopped running when your friend sprayed starting fluid in the throttle body?
Customer

Yep. It started but it idled at like 2000 rpm and that freaked me out so I shut it off and it hasn't started since.

Did the oil light come on after the engine died or while it was running?
Customer

After it died. But it has always been on since we got the car. And every time we took it in to have it fixed the light was off and a couple weeks later it would come on. The code reader said it was the throttle body control sensor and then it would say it was the o2 sensor.

Yes, based upon what you've described I was thinking that we have a throttle body issue. If that is the issue it should retain a failure code. If you can give me the current code(s) I can give you a better idea of what is going on.
I'm less concerned about the oil light as it will come on if the key is in the "ON" position when the engine dies.

I don't have the code. That was like 2 months or so ago I had it done. The car has been fine until yesterday. When he sprayed that carb cleaner in it.Yeah the oil light I'm not worried about either. I figured it came on when it died. Also the lightening bolt light came on on me yesterday as well.

The lightening bolt is for the electronically controlled throttle body system. That will definitely be part of your issue. If you can get the codes scanned for me I can provide you with the diagnostic steps for the issue.

Yeah I don't have a code reader now. My dad is the one who had it. I can ask him if he has the code.

Sounds good. The lightening bolt confirms we have an electronic throttle body system issue. You will need an OEM capable scan tool to perform these diagnostics. If you'd like to provide me with the code I can confirm the diagnostic steps to identify the issue and resolve it. Make sure you have the scan tool and a multi-meter to perform the necessary system tests.

What will happen if there is too much oil in a car?
Your Auto Inspector

It can damage the seals and engine internals. The oil will make its way into the cylinders as well.
Customer

if I drain it and change it, will that maybe help? It starts now but blows out thick white smoke.
Your Auto Inspector

If we're blowing white smoke we have coolant getting into the cylinders and combusting. You need to perform a block test to confirm that you have hydrocarbons in the cooling system. From there you will perform a compression test to verify which cylinder or cylinders are losing compression and then perform a cylinder leak down test on those cylinders to confirm the cylinder will not hold pressure and that you hear air/see bubbles in the radiator with the cap removed.
This definitely sounds like a blown head gasket which is pretty serious internal engine work.
Still not sure what you need?

Hello. This is a common problem on this generation of Impala. Some solutions I have seen work with this problem are replacing the mass air flow sensor (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/mass-airflow-sensor-replacement) or crankshaft position sensor (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/crankshaft-position-sensor-replacement). The mass air flow sensor relays to...
