While driving my 2006 PT all my warning lights on my dash came on, my fuel gauge dropped along with the RPM needle. Then after a second or two all the lights turn off and the gauges return to normal. This has happened several times but it always returns to normal. I’m now worried it won’t. I’ve checked and all the fuses are clean and less then 4 months ago it was serviced for a [timing belt](/topics-timing-belt-chrysler/) in which they replaced all the gaskets/seals, bolts and other hard to reach pieces fixing the belt. They also put in a new [battery](/topics-battery-chrysler/). I’ve hooked a a code machine to it and it read clean. Any ideas on what could be wrong? Mechanic's Assistant: Have you checked the fuses? The dashboard bulbs? Yes Mechanic's Assistant: What is the make/model of your '06 car? PT cruiser Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your PT Cruiser yourself? What have you tried so far? Is there any change in the way the vehicle is driving when this happens?

No other then the gauges dropping, there's no jerking or reving of the [engine](/topics-engine-chrysler/)I try and keep my foot steady just in caseI also drove with the radio off today and didn't notice any out of place sound. The temperature gauge is the only one that stays steady/normal
Automotive Expert
Okay, there are a few things that can cause the issue you're describing: 1. Failing Instrument Cluster 2. Bad/Loose Wiring or Connection 3. Bad signal from the PCM or through the computer data lines (highly unlikely with the temp gauge working constantly) The first thing to do is to scan the computer for codes, as we should trigger a failure code based upon what you've described. But as you've mentioned that you've already done this and have no codes, next thing is to start the engine and hit around the dash to see if we can duplicate the issue, this is one way to determine if we have a bad wire or loose connection. Next step is to pull the instrument panel out and check the connection between the cluster and the wiring harness itself. From there if nothing is found I would ship out the instrument cluster to be inspected/repaired. This is something that requires professional equipment and nothing that we could do ourselves. **Most likely we have a failing instrument panel that will require replacement based upon what you are describing. I've included a detailed description of how the cluster circuit works, a color coded wiring diagram and step by step directions on how to remove the cluster for inspection.**

I have a picture of when the warning lights are on if that would help ?I've a picture of the warning lights when it happened if that would help

I'd be glad to see them. Please send.

Do all of the gauges stop working when this happens? All of the gauges appear to be working in the picture?

The fuel gauge is actively dropping here because I've an almost full tank of gas and the tack always drops after the fuel gaugeI was driving so the picture had to be quick since they also flash so quickly too
Automotive Expert
That makes sense. It sounds like the cluster is losing power and then it's coming back on, especially if all the lights come on and all the gauges stop and then start again. The lights all come on at the "bulb check" which happens when you first start the cluster. This is how you know all the bulbs are working. When the gauges restart do the sweep all the way to the right and back all the way to the left before going to the correct position?

No they just go back to where they're supposed to sit
Automotive Expert
Okay, the issue is most likely in the instrument cluster itself. But we still want to double check the connections to see if we are momentarily losing power to the cluster.

Is checking the cluster something I can do on my own ?
Automotive Expert
No, it's something that has to be done by a specialist. The system is tested with equipment similar to what a TV repair person would use. We pull them and ship them to a company who tests them for us.

Ohh okay
Automotive Expert
Sorry, but if we don't have the equipment to test I feel it's safe to say that you wouldn't either.

Yeah no I'm not mechanically inclined so I'm not touching anything haha
Automotive Expert
Yes, but hopefully this is a simple repair.

I hope soAbout how much does this usually cost ?
Automotive Expert
Generally around $[200](/topics-200/)-$[300](/topics-300/) for the repair, plus the cost to remove/replace the cluster.

ShitSorry
Automotive Expert
No problem.

This does sound like a very frustrating experience. Unfortunately it is difficult to pinpoint exactly what is causing your computer to go bad (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/how-long-does-an-engine-control-module-ecm-last) without knowing what kind of computers have been installed in your vehicle. I would try and have the fuel injectors (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/what-causes-fuel-injectors-to-get-clogged-or-dirty) and throttle body cleaned out (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/clean-throttle-body). This should clean out injectors and intake valve carbon deposits that can cause the rough idle. If after driving the vehicle, and the CEL comes...

The industry rule of thumb is to replace transmission fluid (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/transmission-fluid-service) every 40,000 miles.
