Hi i have a question regarding my car. a few weeks ago it over heated and there was smoke and the coolant spilled. i took it over to a repair shop and they replaced the fan but the problem wasn’t solved. i then took it to my mechanic who later told me there was a leak, so he had changed the water pump and thermostat. my car was fine for about a week then one day i drove somewhere a bit far almost 35-40 min away from home and back and my car started getting hot. it did not get to the red line was it was pretty close. i don’t know what the problem could be now Mechanic's Assistant: What part of the car is the leak coming from? And are you sure it's water? Not quite sure where exactly but it was near the belt , the mechanic did not tell me what it was just said there was a leak, i saw it for myself too it looked like water Mechanic's Assistant: What is the make/model/year of your car? 2014 ford mustang Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Mustang yourself? What have you tried so far? No i have not Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the Mechanic to know before I connect you? Before my car had its water pump and thermostat replaced it did overheat 3x so i was told if it didn’t fix the problem then most likely it was the engine which comes at a higher price to fix

Thanks for using JustAnswer.com! My name is \*\*\*\*\* \*\*\*\*\* I'll try to answer your car questions. I'll start off with some basic checks to do, then we can get into more advanced diagnostics if needed. Let me know if any questions come up, or if there is anything I can do to help! You can update this message at anytime. - I'm sorry to hear about the problem with the car, but would be glad to try and help! - Engine overheating can happen for a few different reasons, but mostly due to the inability to remove the heat from the engine. We'll want to make sure that there aren't any external coolant leaks using a cooling system pressure tester. Then we would look for sticking thermostat, plugged radiator, and then internal engine problems like a failing head gasket that could cause the engine to overheat. - If you're not seeing the coolant boiling over when the engine is overheating, then this is probably more of a gauge issue. Will want to use a scan tool to check for trouble codes, then see if there is any issue with the coolant temperature sensor input to the gauge. - Lemme know what you're seeing, or if any questions come up while checking it out!

New Expert here. The previous expert is correct. You will need to do some testing to see where the problem is. Are you seeing any leaks?

no leaks after changing water punppump
Automotive Expert
Ok good. Does the heater blow hot?

it does
Automotive Expert
Ok then it definitely has enough coolant in it. Do you have a scan tool to check the temperature sensor reading in the PCM?

i do not
Automotive Expert
I see. OK then you will need to check the thermostat operation to make sure BOTH radiator hoses are the same temperature when the engine reaches operating temperature. If one is not hot, then that means the thermostat is sticking. I know you had your thermostat changed already but I would still check it. Can you do that?

i want to know why my car ran hot the other day it’s been a week and a half since i had the water pump and thermostat replaced and radiator fan. it’s overheated 3x before the water pump and thermostat replacement but it ran hot the other even tho it didn’t quite reach the red line markwas told if that didn’t fix the problem then most likely it’s an engine problem which comes at a higher cost about $2000

i checked my radiator hose today, the top one is hot and the bottom one is cold
Automotive Expert
**what size engine?**

V6

if the top hose is hot and the bottom hose is cold then the thermostat isn't working correctly. since since the lower hose is the hose that the thermostat housing is attached to, that can be the only conclusion (attached)

Radiator leak.
The radiator for the Tahoe has two plastic side tanks where all connections to hoses and reservoir tank are made. This radiator is not repairable and will have to be replaced if the radiator is deemed faulty. A pressure test...
Getting codes for misfires and a failed heat sensor
The codes listed indicate that your vehicle is running lean, and that there is a problem with the air fuel ratio sensor's signal and heater circuit. These are probably related to the misfire that you are experiencing. I would recommend...
Advice on cooler additives
Some of it is "snake" oil (that doesn't work) and some of it works to some extent. Realize that the best cooling is water. Water has specific heat and cooling. So water actually cools better than antifreeze. But of course...
Emissions solenoid
The emissions code may have been due to a loose gas cap (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/gas-cap-replacement). As for the reversing issue, the transmission shift cable (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/shift-selector-cable-replacement) may be worn and not going into reverse until you move past it and back into reverse....
Are all four rotors the same?
Hi there. On vehicles with four wheel disc brakes and rotors (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/brake-rotor-disc-replacement), the parts are usually made for front or rear applications - usually meaning that they're not interchangeable. If you are looking to service your brakes elsewhere, our expert...
Heating problem
The first thing to confirm is whether or not the engine operating temperature is in the normal range and whether there is sufficient coolant in the radiator. If, for example, the engine cooling system thermostat is stuck open, and thus...
Grinding noise during starting
Hi There, I believe you may be on the right track in terms of the starter gear not disengaging from the flywheel quick enough upon start up. This can happen for a couple of reasons. Either the starter solenoid itself...
Cost to repair cracked transmission cover after item hit skid plate 2015 Acura MDX
Hi there - I recommend a transmission inspection (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/transmission-fluid-is-leaking-inspection) ASAP to confirm and evaluate any damage from this impact. Even if not leaking now, if something is fractured or cracked, a major fluid loss and repair could lurk around the...
Can a jeep run and drive without a water pump??
Driving or running the engine without the water pump working to circulate the coolant through the motor will cause the motor to overheat and may damage the engine costing thousands of dollars versus using a tow truck to take the...
