Car overheated due to no anti freeze in coolant Mechanic's Assistant: Have you checked the coolant? Have you checked for a leak in the cooling system? Yes radiator has a hole Mechanic's Assistant: What is the make/model/year of your car? Hynduai Tuscan 2006 Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your vehicle yourself? What have you tried so far? Yes myself I bought a new radiator but I don’t know if that is the only problem Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the Mechanic to know before I connect you? Car won’t start just crank like it wants to start but wont

Hey there, my name is Jake.Sorry your having issues, but thanks for reaching out.You didn’t drive the vehicle while it was overheating until it died did you?

I was driving home and I noticed the temperature gauge go all the way too hott then the car shut off and died I pulled overThere is a hole in the radiator and I bought a new one but I am afraid I change it and it’s not longer the problem the engine is
Automotive Expert
If the engine overheated AND died and will not start now, I would check compression before doing anything just in case the head is warped or headgasket blown causing low compression.

How do I check the engine and low compression?
Automotive Expert
You just need a compression tester, auto parts stores will rent one to you and refund you the rental fee after you return it.

Could I have possibly messed up the engine ? When I turn the key it’s just wines like it wants to start but doesn’t
Automotive Expert
No compression would confirm the engine issue (headgasket or cylinder head)Or low compressionI assume by whine the engine is turning but not starting, if so low compression could cause that

Where do I plug it in ? The cars a hynduai Tucson 2006 2.0LI bought the car with a new engine it only has 50kHow could I tell if it’s a head gasket or the engine rod knocking when I do the compression test? How could I tell if it’s a head gasket or the engine rod knocking when I do the compression test??
Automotive Expert
rod know would be an audible noise near the oil pan, that's different. you remove the spark plug to insert the compression tester.

Where do I plug the compression test in under the steering wheel? Can I run the test even though the car won’t start
Automotive Expert
what? a compression tester does NOT go under the steering wheel. it tests CYLINDER COMPRESSION. you remove the spark plug like i previously mentioned and screw it in its place.

Will it work even if the car will not turn onThe car won’t fully turn on
Automotive Expert
yes, all you do is CRANK the engine, it doesn't have to start and you actually don't WANT it to start. Most people pull the fuel pump fuse. Have you considered taking it somewhere or calling a mobile mechanic? if not familiar with these types of tests nay be easier just to do that.

Should I pull the fuel pump fuse before I do compression test
Automotive Expert
i would recommend YES

My plan is to replace the radiator (because I need to anyway it has a hole) and see if it starts and if it doesn’t start still after that I want to do the compression test. If the compression test isn’t good how can I know if it’s just a head gasket or something else?
Automotive Expert
if it's low compression in 1 or more cylinders from overheating it's the HG or cylinder head warping. you have to remove the head for the headgasket anyway and can have teh head hecked for straightness before re-installing.

What should a cylinder read if it has good compressionIf It doesn’t have good compression then it should definitely start after I change the radiator right ?Radiator has a hole but car won’t start
Automotive Expert
Radiator should not have any effect on starting. If it has low compression then the head-gasket needs replaced and the head send to a machine shop to check for straightness. If the compression is GOOD and withing spec (184-206 psi) then you need to check for fuel and spark. Based off the description of what happened and the current crank, but no start condition you need to start with a compression test though.
