Picked up car from having transmission and transfer case replaced 2 days ago. Ran ok day I picked it up but wouldn’t start yesterday. It got cold overnight so tried jumping it but that didn’t work, battery was tested and it’s putting out 12v sitting and 11.8/9 when I go to start it. Lights all come on in the car and you can hear a click when you try to start it. Could my starter have gone out or is it related to the transmission job? Mechanic's Assistant: Where exactly do you think the noise is coming from? And how long has this been going on? No noise besides the starter click, happened yesterday Mechanic's Assistant: What is the make/model/year of your transmissions? 2007 BMW [X3](/topics-x3/) Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your X3 yourself? What have you tried so far? No I took it to the shop trying to figure out starting issue myself Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the Mechanic to know before I connect you? Can’t put the car in neutral or decompress [brake](/topics-brake/) but assuming that has to do with the no start issue

Hello, my name is \*\*\*\*\* \*\*\*\*\* I will be helping you with your question today. I've been working on BMWs for over 30 years now, so I should be able to help you through this. Please understand that some of my suggestions may require special diagnostic tools and equipment that many home mechanics may not have, but are often required. Actually, this one is pretty easy. If you're anything under 12.2v, even when it's cold, you're going to need a battery. BMW's built in the last 20 years won't even attempt to crank the starter if the battery isn't sound, and at 11.8-11.9 volts, you're likely only seeing maybe 200CCA, which isn't enough to turn the starter. Please let me know if I can offer any further information

Thanks! Why would a jump not work but the lights still come on? I tried jumping twice and it sat for about 20 min hooked up

Was that 11.9 figure with the jumper cables on or off? I was assuming with them on. Also, were you jumping right at the battery, or the jump posts under hood?

Off- used the posts under the hood

Ok, got that. So, 2 answers to this. 1) let's say that the battery is low enough, that even with cables on, the total amp capacity in the starting system is hovering around 300CCA then it won't start. 2) however, let's say that you've got plenty of voltage, then there are 3 possibilities here, that I can think of. - braided stainless ground strap between [engine](/topics-engine/) support bracket and subframe is corroded or broken (this should have been noticed during trans change if so) - one of the starter wires isn't properly connected from the recent trans swap - starter has gone bad (unrelated to recent work)

Ok, thanks. Would it hurt to try jumping it again?
Automotive Expert
No, not at all, but if you can reach, try to get the jumper cables directly on the battery in the hatch.

Got it, thanks!

very glad to help!

What is the front crash severity sensor?
The air bag system in your car is much more advanced than those used even just a few years prior. It’s capable of determining just how severe an impact is and whether or not air bags should be inflated, and...
Alternator making noise
The charging system would need to be checked to see if it is charging, or killing the battery; the alternator is most likely the cause. I recommend that you have a mechanic, such as one from YourMechanic, come by and...
Odometer reset after starting the car normally
This sounds like a processing error in the instrument cluster. The old information is probably lost, and the best way to prevent this in the future would be to have the instrument cluster replaced. You may be able to find...

Issue with AC after timing chain replacement?
My vote is for coincidence. The temperature blend door actuators are a pretty common failure item on these models as well as timing chain concerns. The temperature blend door actuator is mounted inside the dashboard while the timing chain replacement...
My car runs hot immediately after starting, I just noticed it yesterday.
A small coolant leak will in time become a bigger issue. It is not good for the engine to be overheated (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/car-is-overheating-inspection) because it can damage the engine internally. Water is okay to use for a temporary fix. Any condition...
My fan for my a c and heater is only blowing air on 2 3 and 4 settings but not 1

Hi there. The code that kind of indicates the root source of your problem is the P1603 - which is a Chrysler specific OBD-II trouble code that indicates PCM internal dual - port RM communication failure. This code typically occurs...
