I am an old fart and i did not know that there was a difference between synthetic oil and the old regular oil. I put the old type of oil in my car when it needed it. then I was told that My car was suppose to be using the synthetic. Now my car is leaking. Is this why. J looked under the engine and it appears that some of the engine block screws are where its leaking. The car is a 2008 BMW 650I. Did I really mess it up?

My car also won't pass the smog test. It smells from the tail pipe but there is no visible smoke,

How did it fail? Does the paperwork say what failed? Being an 08 they should have just plugged it into the computer. It should pass as long as the check engine light is not on.

Is the smell from the oil leak hitting the tail pipe?

If oil is leaking onto the exhaust pipe it will have a strong oil burning smell. Likely the oil wouldnt be on the tail pipe but up closer to the engine.

There is a light that comes on showing a engine. It stays on all of the time. Although it went off for about a week then it came on again

Yes. That light is the check engine light. You can not pass smog test with that light on. That means there is a fault code stored in the engine computer and there is a fault detected. You need to have the check engine light diagnosed and repaired so the light stays off and then you can pass smog test.

It sounds like your catalytic converters are stopped up. This is a common issue with fords. If you have an infrared laser temperature gun, you could aim it at your tailpipes while someone else revs the engine. If the catalytic...
It is a little suspicious the vehicle wouldn't start after the service. There aren't many sensors in the location of the top passenger motor mount, but the camshaft position sensor (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/camshaft-position-sensor-replacement). If this sensor is damaged, the vehicle may not...
Hi there, thanks for writing in about your 2003 Hyundai Elantra. It sounds like the starter pinion or flywheel gear that it engages have worn out causing the metal grating noise you mention. If you want to have this checked,...
The mass air flow sensors (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/mass-airflow-sensor-replacement) are known to go bad on Nissan Titans. The symptoms you are describing point to the MAF not working properly. Check to be sure you have reconnected the new one correctly, proper continuity and...
The temperature gauge may not go up to operating temperature if your engine thermostat is stuck in the open position. If the thermostat is stuck open your engine may never get up to normal operating temperature and this will cause...
Hello. Sounds like you have a cooling system leak, and you have air inside the engines coolant passages. The engine will violently boil off the coolant inside the engine as you have observed. Let it cool, refill with coolant, turn...
Hi there. Typically when an individual gear is hard to shift into with a manual transmission, it's an internal gear failure inside the transmission case or linkage issue. When all gears are hard to shift, it's likely the clutch. Since...
