I have bmw e39 and I changed the fuel injectors and many other parts as new .. but I am still having a black smoke from the exhaust .. what should I do next to fix this issue
Mechanic's Assistant: Have you noticed an increase in fuel consumption? And how does the BMW start—same as usual?
Yes a lot of gass it takes for a short time.. it is starting normal
Mechanic's Assistant: What is the model/year of your BMW?
1997
Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your vehicle yourself? What have you tried so far?
Yes my self and also mechanics..I changed the vanos lately
Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the Mechanic to know before I connect you?
Yes .. I noticed that there is no spark in the middle .. I replaced the ignition coil and still not working

Hello and welcome to Just Answer
My name is \*\*\*\*\* \*\*\*\*\* I've been an automotive engineer since 1996 and together we're going to solve this issue.
if the [engine](/topics-engine/) is running very rich then I'd say to next check the fuel pressure is not running past its set point of 3 bar ( 44 psi) if it is then replace the pressure regulator on the end of the injector rail
if the pressure is OK then I'd say to replace the coolant temp sensor as teh next step

Thanks sir .. I have noticed that my temp. Coolant plug is not connected

Is it necessary to be plugged in sir ?I'll send you photo from my car

Yes with no coolant temp sensor input the eCU will not be controlling the engine fuelling properly and the cooling fans may not work either

Thanks sir..so how about the oxygen sensor here in my country i don't find it new .. and i need one because my old ones had a cutting wires .. so can i buy it used as the airmass sensor too !!?

the O2 sensor also has a strong effect on how the fuel mixture is calculated as well as the airmass / MAF sensor
I understand sourcing OEM parts at a reasonable price is hard and often the pattern parts can give more issues than they solve
I would say you can use this firm for a lambda sensor though as their quality is good
https://www.lambdasensor.com/
as for the MAF sensor before replacing it, try cleaning the MAF sensor wires, as they can get coated with dirt over time which then offsets the reading
Use some contact cleaner or [brake](/topics-brake/) cleaner to spray onto the wires to remove the dirt – on no account touch the wires with anything as they are very fragile
if this doesn't help check the owners club forums for a good used part as a cheap pattern MAF from ebay is not worth fitting

Thanks sir .. I did put the plug of the temp. Sensor and I had noticed that the idle became stable not hesitating ..!
Sir .. how about the catalyzer!! Do I need to change it too in order to clear the black smoke coming from the exhaust completely ?!

the cat should clean up with hard use
try sorting the O2 sensor and cleaning the MAF next

Thanks sirIm just having another question about the abs system..it's not working and I had changed its motor and 2 of its wheel's sensors..it did work for just 1 week then collapsed again .. what shall i do in order to get it work properly?I also had cleaned the ECU system conductors by WD 40 then i sprayed carburator cleaner .. is it possible that it ruined it or it has no effect on it .. i just fond a spark near the abs control when i touched the side wires of it ..Also sir .. how about the EZI extra power lube oil .. I added it inside my motor .. does it have a good or bad effect? Because later i had a ruined vanos recorded by the computer and I had to change it .. !Also sir .. the gear is stucking at a speed of 120km when i'm using the 2nd accelerator kick and i have to release the accelerator for a second in order to get the gear steping up .. where is the problem sir ? In the gear box or in the type of the oil ?

Today I had noticed that when I changed the place of the oxygen sensor the missed spark plug did work..is there a specific site for a 2 of the same kind o2 sensor? Also when i suddenly pressing on the accelerator i find that the idle is jerkingAlso about the ABS system sir .. does it have a relation between it and the acceleration speed if it's not working (the ABS)Because sometimes i find the car as a beast (accelerating so fast) and in many other times it's not even like a donkey (very weak acceleration)

OK, to deal with the ABS 1st
The quickest route to repair is to have the car plugged into a diagnostic machine which will read off the fault code stored in the ECU (providing the light is still on at this point) and indicate which sensor has failed or whether the fault is more serious.
However with ABS systems 95% of the time its a problem with one of the wheel speed sensors and I'd first check the connections at all four corners first for any signs of corrosion or chafed wiring.
The sensor is located in the wheel hub so you'll have to remove each wheel in turn to inspect them all.
Also check that the toothed wheel that the sensor points to is clean and free of any debris.
you can check each sensor's function by plugging the two output wires into an AC voltmeter and spinning the wheel quite quickly, you should get a voltage signal that increases with rev's.
Its possible that the fault is only a bad connection to one of the wheel sensors.
This may be remedied by removing each wheel in turn and unplugging each sensor and cleaning the contacts with a squirt of electrical contact cleaner. Then refitting.
and if you have used WD40 on the ECU connector but then also used carb cleaner, then the carb cleaner should have removed any oil
might be worth cleaning it again but do not use WD40 for electrical connections
the EZI extra power lube isn't something I'd bother with , the fact it seemed to bung up your Vanos means I'd avoid it in the future, just use good quality fully synthetic oil like Mobil 1 or Silkolene
as for the transmission being reluctant to shift then I'd take a look at the colour of the transmission oil it should be a dark red colour if its black then its needs changing together with its oil filter. Also check its level with the gearbox warm and just after you've moved the selector through all the positions leaving it for a few seconds in each one and then back to park.
You can top up the box through the dipstick tube if required and make sure you use the correct oil for your car as the fluids are not all the same. Some manufacturers recommended a change of the type of fluid - Speak to the local dealer and parts dept - they will advise you on the updated fluid to use..
If that’s all OK then check all the electrical connections of the gearbox, remove each connector in turn and spray with contact cleaner. Check that the wiring to the gearbox is in good condition with no chafing or frayed wire
If this is OK then check the selector lever linkage / cable under the car for any broken parts and or missing bolts as if this is coming adrift then it can rub on the car body or just bind up
Then - you should top up if low and re try it - or, if its level is ok - and condition is ok - then the next step is to drain it off - open it up and clean the filters inside -- refill and retry it..

Hello sir how are you doing.. just i had remembered that i did cleaned the throttle position sensor by wd40 ... Is it appropriate or it can cause a problem? And what shall i do in order to reverse its bad effect if there is

OK just use plenty of carb cleaner on the switch connections to remove the oil and a blast of compressed air ( you can use a footpump for this ) to remove any residue

Sir .. the computer recorded 2 errors .. 1 for the vanos and other for the camshaft sensor.. I had changed the vanos by a used one and still not changed the camshaft sensor.. can this bad camshaft sensor causing stucking of the gearbox!?Also about the abs system.. I am having e36 body with e39 machine inside .. can this abs error from an e36 abs sensors of the wheels !? Do I need to change it to e39 wheel's sensors?! Can it fit in my e36 ?!!It's 2800 machine and controls of e39 on e36 body ..

OK
if you're running different ABS controls to the original wheel hubs and sensors then yes this will give issues, the sensors will usually be interchangable regarding electrical output but the toothed wheels inside the hubs may have a different no of teeth on them compared to what the ABS control unit is expecting to see
Still not sure what you need?
