Mechanic's Assistant: How old is the engine? And when was it last serviced?
It’s. 2002 engine has never been replaced service was done only last month
Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Rodeo yourself? What have you tried so far?
Tried to refill to the diff oil as some have said the front diff oil might be low. I’ve also heard it could be transfer case or a hearing has collapsed

Hello! My name is Gary.
Welcome to JustAnswer.
I'm reviewing your question now, and will post back with a reply shortly.
Do you have a Holden dealer nearby?
There is a few techline repairs for this condition.
One involves resetting the TCCM, Transfer Case Control Module, which is under the drivers seat.

We don't have a Holden dealer near by. My partner said it engages in 4x4 and it moves but then clunks very loudly and stops and revs out and won't move then it will clunk again and move a short distance and then stops again

Yes, sounds like the transfer case is not moving the selector arm correctly.
Do you have a towbar?
Can you check your reverse lights are working?

Ok, thanks for that.
Now, how often would you use 4wd, once a week, once a month, or rarely?

This loud clunk is under the middle of your Rodeo, or at the front?
If you do get just a neutral, no drive, I would say the fault is in the transfer case or module.
What state is in now, 2wd, 4hi, or 4lo?
Can you push all 3 buttons for 10 seconds, and then tell me what you get, with the engine running, transmission in neutral please?

My partner says the clunk is coming from the front of the car. He said it goes into 4x4 4H and when you put it in drive it drive forward a few inches then stops and you try and get it to drive forward again it revs but doesn’t move then the loud clunk happens and then it jolts forward again and then stops. We reset it and still had the same problem we also dropped the transfer case oil and changed it and there was a lot of metal shavings and plastic bits coming out of it.

Oh dear, that's not good.
Did you keep what drained out of the transfer case?
Parts coming out is a mechanical failure of the transfer case.

We kept a piece of debris that came out of it but we didn’t keep the oil no.

Wow, I have been with Holden for nearly 40 years, and I have never seen that.
So we are now looking for a transfer case assembly for your vehicle.
2002 RA diesel 5 speed manual?
I'll see if I can find some more information on where to get one.
