What is the Brake Light Bulb all about?

Brake light bulbs are located at the back of the car, housed inside a protective covering (lens). The brake light turns on when you push the brake pedal, letting drivers know that you are slowing down. If the brake light does not illuminate, you’re at a higher risk for causing an accident and/or being pulled over and cited by a police officer.

Keep in mind:

Keep in mind the number of brake lights a car has can vary. The third (or rear window/center) brake light should not be overlooked when doing an inspection.

How it's done:

  • Inspect brake bulbs, sockets and wiring.
  • Replace the bulb, if faulty.
  • Check all the lights.

Our recommendation:

A mechanic should inspect the brake light during a major service. Before replacing a bulb, your mechanic should also inspect the socket and wiring. Due to the high amount of current flowing through these sockets, sometimes the sockets melt, causing the brake light to malfunction.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Brake Light Bulb?

  • Brake lights do not work when brake pedal is depressed.
  • Light Bulb warning light is illuminated on the dashboard.

How important is this service?

When you apply the brakes, your brake light bulb illuminates. This allows drivers behind you a warning that you are slowing down, so that they can slow down as well. A dead brake light bulb will never work, and your car will be devoid of this important safety feature. Not having working brake lights is also illegal, and can result in a hefty "fix-it" ticket.

Saturn SL1 L4-1.9L - Car starts and then dies - Henderson, Nevada
right on time. Was very nice and professional. He checked everything, explains everything. He is coming back for a minor tune up and I know he will do a good job. Very happy I found this site and that they sent Dave for the call. This is a great site for me and I am sure others as well. The web is very well set up. You know when he is on his way and even can track his car and route as he comes to the house.

Saturn SL1 L4-1.9L - Starter - Benicia, California
Gary is excellent! He came prepared in case the problem was the ignition switch, and not the starter (as I said it was). He did everything he said he would do and did it efficiently & and told me exactly what he was doing, so I learned a bit as well. I couldn't have asked for more. I don't know what you're paying him, but it should be more. It's too rare that you get exactly what you bargained for. With him, you do.

Saturn SL1 L4-1.9L - Power Steering Pressure Hose - Hollywood, Florida
Jose Is a very competent mechanic...on time and able to work on the fly. The Power Steering Hose in my car, '03 Cadillac Seville, is not particularly easy to get at, nor did it play nice on trying to remove it...but Jose got the job done and done right! Will definitely use him again for anything else mechanical that comes up with this car.

I was passing a truck going about 80 mph. After I took my foot off the accelerator but I continued to go faster and faster. I applied the brake, and I slowed down. When I took my foot off the brake, the car started to go faster and faster again. I Stopped at the next intersection and turned off the ignition. Started it up again and it revved like crazy, then when I started to drive again, it jerked. Stopped in a parking lot, turned off the car again, then restarted it. The engine revved again and I smelled burning rubber. My husband came and started it and it started fine. Drove fine around town. Have a Subaru Forester.
