What is the Door Handle or Door Latch all about?

The car has at least two door handles per door: one on the inside and another on the outside. Due to frequent use, they will eventually break down and could need repair. Sometimes the handle itself is fine, but there is a problem with the door latch assembly that prevents the door from shutting and locking properly.

Keep in mind:

  • Sometimes the visible part of the door handle needs to be replaced, and sometimes the mechanism hidden inside the door needs to be replaced.
  • If the exterior door handle doesn’t work, there’s a good chance that the interior door handle is also faulty.
  • If physical damage (such as an accident) has caused the door handle to break, there may also be damage to the door lock switch or door lock actuator.

How it's done:

  • Remove the door panel to gain access.
  • Remove and replace the broken door handle.
  • Inspect door latch and replace if not working.
  • Check door for proper operation.
  • Reinstall door panel.

Our recommendation:

As soon as you notice that your door is having difficulty opening, you should schedule an inspection. If your exterior door handle stops working entirely, stop trying to use it: trying to force the door can cause further damage. If you notice that your exterior door handle is feeling fragile, you should also schedule an inspection.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Door Handle or Door Latch?

  • Door will not open.
  • Door will not shut.

How important is this service?

An exterior door handle exists so that you can open your vehicle from the outside. When the exterior door handle malfunctions, you’ll have to enter your vehicle from a different door, or keep your window rolled down so you can use the interior door handle (if it works). An exterior door handle that doesn’t work is a large nuisance to any driver.

Saab 9-3 L4-2.0L Turbo - Car is shaking or vibrating - Fairfield, California
If possible I would give Josh an even higher rating than a 10. He was very thorough, professional and easy to work with. Josh found two significant defects with my car that my regular mechanic either willfully disregarded or was too inexperienced to see and I don't believe it was the former. I look forward to seeing Josh next week to make the repairs! Thank You Your Mechanic! Joe
