What is the Vacuum Brake Booster Check Valve all about?

The vacuum brake booster check valve is part of the brake booster, and plays an essential role in brake system operation. It is a one-way valve that allows air to be sucked out of the booster, but does not allow air to enter it. This is a safety solution to ensure that if the engine is turned off, or if frequent stops or pedal presses are required, the brakes still operate. Its capacity ensures that you have enough boost for several brake applications. The vacuum brake booster check valve connects the vacuum hose from the engine to the body of the brake booster.

Keep in mind:

  • The vacuum brake booster check valve is not designed to require maintenance, so it will not be inspected during routine services.
  • Damage to the vacuum hose from the engine can mimic problems with the check valve.

How it's done:

  • The faulty vacuum brake booster check valve is located and identified
  • The vacuum brake booster check valve is removed
  • The new vacuum brake booster check valve is installed
  • The brakes are tested for proper vacuum brake booster check valve operation
  • The vehicle is road tested and checked for proper vacuum brake booster check valve and brakes operation

Our recommendation:

Many different issues can create problems with the braking system, including air in the lines, dirty/burned brake fluid, and more. If you suspect a vacuum brake booster check valve issue, have one of our expert mechanics diagnose it.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Vacuum Brake Booster Check Valve?

  • Brake pedal feels spongy when pressed
  • Brake pedal is very hard to press
  • Brake pedal begins as easy to press then becomes very difficult

How important is this service?

While a leak in the vacuum brake booster check valve will not eliminate your ability to stop, it will make braking much more difficult and increase your stopping distance. It should be repaired as soon as possible.

Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera V6-3.1L - Engine is running louder than normal - Wayne, Pennsylvania
Clarissa was extremely knowledgeable about the car’s engine, and was able to tell me what needed to be repaired in a way that I easily understood. She seemed to be very honest and trustworthy, and left me with the feeling that there would be no “paraded” charges unlike some car repair places. She was respectful and empathetic to my desire to save money.

Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera V6-3.3L - Car is not starting - Orlando, Florida
James arrived on time and was extremely courteous, friendly, professional and knowledgeable. this is my first experience with Your Mechanic and I will not hesitate to use them again. I highly recommend Your Mechanic based on just my first experience with them, their booking process is a bit muddled and confusing as well as their copious, confusing emails, but nothing is perfect, hopefully they will continue to improve in that less essential area,

Where is the fuel pump shutoff? 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser

Hi - the (inertia) fuel pump cutoff switch is mounted on the rear face of the right (passenger), rear strut. Mounted against the strut mount tower with 2 bolts.

Second Opinion] Last night I was driving about 45 miles per hour. Approaching a free way exit. When I lightly tapped on my breaks. Immediately all the lights of my dash came on and my wheels locked. My break pedal became unresponsive and I began to slide. It took several seconds for my cars breaks to respond. Finally they did and they released. After my car finally gained traction. My car started driving normally but all the lights on my dash continued to stay lite. Except my parking break light. It was blinking.
