What is the parking brake cable all about?

The parking brake (also known as emergency brake) cable is a steel cable that is very thin. It connects the parking brake lever to the parking brake shoes. When you activate the parking brake, the cable pulls on the parking brake shoes, which causes them to clamp onto the brake drum or rotor. If the parking brake cable gets too much slack, the parking brake won’t work, and the cable will need to be adjusted.

Keep in mind:

  • After adjusting the parking brake cable, the parking brake should always be tested.
  • When the parking cable is adjusted it should be inspected to see if it needs to be replaced.

How it's done:

  • Adjust parking brake cable
  • Check the parking brake

Our recommendation:

The brake system is the most important part of your vehicle, but sometimes the parking brake is overlooked. Your parking brake cable should be inspected during all maintenance and servicing. If you ever notice that your vehicle’s parking break isn’t working effectively or at all, then you should schedule an inspection immediately.

What are the common symptoms indicating you need to adjust the parking brake cable?

  • Parking brake does not work
  • Parking brake lever is easy to push

How important is this service?

Your parking brake shoes are connected to the parking brake lever by the parking brake cable. When you deploy the parking brake lever, the parking brake cable is pulled taut. This pulls on the parking brake shoes, and causes them to clamp on the rear brake drums or rotors. This clamping causing keeps your wheels from being able to move, and secures your car when it is parked. If the parking brake cable becomes too loose, then the tension created by pulling the parking brake lever isn’t enough to move the parking brake shoes. As a result, when you pull the parking brake lever, the parking brake will not work effectively.

Mazda Miata L4-1.8L - Adjust Parking Brake Cable - Wesley Chapel, Florida
yourmechanic gave Jose the wrong parts twice so I had to wait a lot longer than expected to get my rear brakes done. He got to my house quickly and did the brake job in a timely fashion. Ater the job, my handbrake was not working, I brought it to a friend's house to take a look only to discover that the handbrake cable was not connected to the caliper.

Mazda Miata L4-1.8L - Coolant is leaking - Las Vegas, Nevada
Patrick is the second mechanic to inspect my car from YourMechanic. The first mechanic (Milton) attempted to over-charge me and offer needless services. Then I tried Patrick. Let me tell you, the difference between the two mechanics is night and day. Patrick is very professional, courteous, knowledgeable and has a very strong work ethic. I feel like I'm developing a business relationship with a qualified mechanic who I'll be able to trust and depend on to give me his best. Patrick is the reason I'm giving YourMechanic a second chance. I will only use Patrick from here on out. I'll recommend him to family and friends as well. Thank you, Patrick!

Mazda Miata L4-1.8L - Timing Belt - Moraga, California
Joshua was GREAT! He worked cleanly (first spreading a tarp and mat to catch any drips/drops), safely (jacking up the car and placing the front end on solid jack stands), and knew what he was doing. He ask several questions about the engine before starting to replace the timing belt. He came with all the possible parts he would need even though he didn't use all of them. Since we had a new water pump he gave us a credit for the one not used. He explained what he found and what caused the engine to not run correctly. The concept of Your Mechanic coming to our house to do the repairs saved us towing and repair costs, not to mention the free education I received as Joshua explained what he was doing and finding. He worked quickly and quietly and completed the repairs within the estimated time. He did a very complete cleanup of the car and work area before leaving. Recommend him and Your Mechanic - absolutely. We are hoping to have YourMechanic work on our other cars.
