What is the Brake Wheel Cylinder all about?

Brake wheel cylinders push the brake shoes against the brake drum, causing friction that slows down the car. They are located in the rear brake system, inside the brake drums. Over time, wheel cylinder seals may wear out and start leaking brake fluid, reducing the effectiveness of the brakes.

Keep in mind:

Brake wheel cylinders are replaced in pairs. Both rear tires will get new cylinders.

How it's done:

  • Inspect rear wheel cylinders for leakage.
  • Inspect rear brake shoes and hardware.
  • Replace wheel cylinders if found faulty.
  • Adjust rear brakes.
  • Lube backing plate.
  • Make sure axle seals are not leaking into brake drums.
  • Bleed entire brake system.
  • Perform a brake inspection, including test drive.

Our recommendation:

It is a good idea to get the brake wheel cylinders inspected once every year. You should get your brake system inspected immediately if the brake warning light is on.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Brake Wheel Cylinder?

  • Brake pedal goes all the way to the floor.
  • Noise from rear brakes.
  • Fluid leaking underneath the car near rear tires.

How important is this service?

When you depress your brake pedal, the brake wheel cylinder applies pressure to the brake shoe. This pressure pushes the brake shoe into contact with the brake drum, which creates the friction that allows your vehicle to slow down and stop. When the brake wheel cylinder stops working, it is no longer able to exert enough force onto the brake shoe, and your vehicle will not be able to brake as effectively as it should.

Lexus LS430 V8-4.3L - Timing Belt - Katy, Texas
Ben was top notch: Courteous, friendly, and professional. He changed out a timing belt and serpentine belt, plus secured a mirror that was flopping in the wind, all in about 4 hours, and didn't charge for the mirror. I'll ask for him next time I need service. The site itself is a Godsend. My elderly mother had taken her Lexus to several places and been quoted over $2,000 at each to change her timing belt. I knew that was high. Through Your Mechanic, we got both her timing belt and serpentine belt changed for $710.83. How could I not want to use this service again?!

Punctual, professional, and knowledgeable are what comprise a competent mechanic. Robert replaced all four struts on my vehicle. I worked from home that afternoon, and he completed the work before dinner that evening. Highly recommend.

Lexus LS430 V8-4.3L - Car does not shift from park to drive - Vallejo, California
I was very impressed with the professional manner in which Joshua did the diagnostic test, and clearly explained to me the problem, and when he would return to install the needed part. He also gave me some helpful preventive maintenance tips to prolong the life and value of my car. I have decided to have Joshua service my automobile as needed annually. I plan to share the cards he gave me with my man friends. I never dreamed that I would ever meet a mechanic, and leave with a smile on my face. his personal mobile phone.
