What is the Windshield Washer Pump all about?

The windshield washer pump is a small electric water pump. When the washer pump is activated, it takes the washer fluid from the windshield washer reservoir and directs it to be sprayed through the washer jets onto the windshield. It is an electrical component that can fail over time. If you don't see any fluid coming out of the washer jets when you activate the windshield wiper switch, ask the mechanic to check the tubes for cracks and the nozzles for clogging.

Keep in mind:

Whenever the windshield washer pump is repaired or replaced, the entire windshield washing system should be inspected. It’s possible that the nozzles or the wiper switch are actually the cause of the problem.

How it's done:

  • Test operation of the wiper switch.
  • Make sure the nozzles are not clogged.
  • Test for power and ground at the washer pump.
  • Remove and replace the washer pump.
  • Test for proper operation of the washer system.

Our recommendation:

The windshield washing and wiping system is usually not inspected during routine maintenance. However, anytime a part of the windshield washing and wiping system is replaced or repaired, the windshield washer pump should be checked. If you notice that your vehicle is having a hard time spraying wiper fluid onto your windshield, you should schedule an inspection.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Windshield Washer Pump?

When the washer pump is activated, washer fluid doesn't spray on windshield.

How important is this service?

Your windshield washing system is designed to keep your windshield clean and your visibility high. When you pull the windshield washer switch on the steering column, the windshield washer pump is activated. The windshield washer pump is an electric water pump that pulls washer fluid from the windshield washer reservoir, and sends it to the washer jets, where it is sprayed onto the windshield through nozzles. This washer fluid acts as soap, and the windshield wiper blades then wipe it off. This process cleans your windshield of any dirt and debris that has accumulated on it.

When the windshield washer pump malfunctions, washer fluid will not be sent to the washer jets, and your vehicle will not be able to spray washer fluid onto the windshield. As a result, your visibility will decrease.

Lexus GX470 V8-4.7L - Air Spring Bag Replacement (Driver Side Rear, Passenger Side Rear) - Richardson, Texas
Overall a great experience. My original scheduled appointment had apparently been overbooked in Alex’s schedule through the your mechanic system. He had to reschedule me for the next day, but gave me a discount for the inconvenience. When Alex arrived, he was friendly& informative. I was having the rear suspension airbags replaced (I had purchased the parts myself, as I found the parts I wanted at a better price online). Alex was able to quickly replace the airbags, but ran into a little trouble when trying to inflate them. Apparently the compressor that controls them will shut itself off if it senses too much of a leak (to keep it from burning out the motor). The compressor needs to be reset. It took several attempts with different reset procedures, but Alex kept me up to date along the way, and eventually got it working. The total time for the service was about 2 1/2hrs, but at least half of that was troubleshooting the compressor. The physical replacement of the suspension airbags is pretty straight forward, and I had considered doing the job myself, but had I done that, I would have been lost on the compressor reset, and would have likely wasted lots of extra time & money to get that issue fixed. Even without that added trouble, the cost of the service was well worth it to save me the time & trouble underneath the vehicle in the cold weather we’ve had lately.

Outstanding Service and Professional performance. He took initiative to move up the scheduled time for the appointment due to weather concerns. Showed up promptly and went to work. He answered any and all questions to satisfaction. I will be booking him in the future. He put in extra attention to making sure the job was done and that my SUV was operating safely.
