What is lubricating the hood hinge all about?

The hood of a vehicle is a movable panel that covers the engine. Hinges hold the hood to the rest of the vehicle. When the hood closes, the hinges ensure that the hood latches properly in the same position each time.

Keep in mind:

  • If the hood is not latching properly or the hood no longer lines up with the position of the latch, lubrication will not sufficiently fix the problem.
  • Lubricating the hinges of the hood will make operation smoother and quieter, but will not fix any issues with the hinge’s location or physical damage.

How it's done:

  • Apply grease to the hood hinge

Our recommendation:

Any issue with the hood or hood hinges should be addressed immediately to ensure proper operation and to prevent expensive repairs in the future. By the time the lubricant or grease has worn out on the hood hinge to the point of needing replacement, it is likely that other moving points on the outside of the vehicle have suffered similar wear and tear. Inspect the latch mechanism of the hood, the hinges on the doors, and the hinges holding the trunk lid to the vehicle to assess if they could use lubrication as well. Excess friction in hinges causes them to wear out prematurely and can cause real issues down the road.

What are the common symptoms indicating you need to lubricate the hood hinge?

  • Difficulty opening or closing the hood
  • Squeaking noise when the hood is opened or closed
  • Multiple attempts required to properly close the hood
  • Hood gets stuck when opening or closing

How important is this service?

This service is moderately important and is mostly done as preventative maintenance. In extreme situations, jammed or seized hood hinges can prevent access to the engine compartment. If the issue is with the latching mechanism of the hood, then the service is more crucial. If the hood does not latch properly, there is a chance that it could open while the vehicle is in motion.

I have been a yourmechanic user since the company's early seed funding days. I have recommended yourmechanic to my family and friends and all of them have received great service. But I have to say that Robert by far is the mechanic i've come across with the best attitude, friendliness, trustworthiness and upfront knowledge on hondas and acuras. Last month he serviced my wife's acura and replaced the starter, however in the process the latch to the hood was somehow broken. We called him directly from a number on an invoice to ask about the issue and he immediately made an appt to come see us and rectify the problem, and never hassled us about fault/blame etc. He also explained how it couldve possibly broke when he was fixing it. While he was here I also asked for his advice on my own vehicle and he had no problem helping me determine what I needed service on. Again I cannot emphasize the importance of his customer service -- which coupled by his experienced understanding of my vehicle's shape -- made me request his calendar and book the appointment right there on the spot. So he came today and I gave him the keys, he got right to work and knew exactly what to do and to tell me the time to come back and check up on him. Was able to spot another area that I needed fixing and he got it done swiftly. The man even offered me a donut in the morning, and when he reparked my car back on the driveway after a test drive he also parked it to the side to allow my neighbors room for their vehicles. He pays attention to the little things -- big deal when trusting your ride to someone.

Can I add Lucas oil "transmission fix" to my transmission fluid to see if it helps my issue.

Adding an additive to the transmission to try and fix a problem will not work in most instances and should only be used as a last resort before getting a transmission overhaul.

Good day so i replaced a [timing belt](/topics-timing-belt/) on a 2002 hyundai santa fe and was given some bad advice on top dead center and i need some clarification on how to resolve So i have set the engine now at top deac center on the compression stroke the problem before it was set on the exhaust stroke. Now that i did that the crank pulley lines up fine, piston is at top dead center on compression stroke howevr both cams timing marks are off 180 degrees. note this is on a 2.7 v6 Now what i am wondering is can i just take the belt off rotate the top two cams to the right (front of the car) till they align with timing marks and put it all back together and everything be ok.
