When an air filter becomes dirty, it can have a dramatic effect on performance and the engine may run rough. When the air filter becomes clogged, these problems can become even worse and your vehicle may stop running altogether. When an engine does not get enough clean air it may run “rich,” which means that the engine is receiving too much gasoline and not enough air. Engines that run rich struggle to maintain power, which can be very noticeable when driving.

How this system works:

Your vehicle’s air filter keeps dirt and other contaminants from entering the engine and potentially damaging critical components. Air filters need to be replaced every 10,000 to 15,000 miles, though vehicles in areas of high congestion may need to have their air filters changed more frequently. Most modern vehicles have rectangular filters fitted inside a plastic case in the engine compartment. Older, carbureted engines typically have a circular filter placed above the carburetor. Automotive air filters are made from either paper, foam, or cotton, each with its own set of advantages and disadvantages relative to the cost and filtering ability.

Common reasons for this to happen:

  • Air filters are dirty: Air filters will get dirty and become less effective over time. As more dust and other particles are collected, the filter will struggle to maintain good airflow to the engine. In areas where smog is prevalent, or where there is a lot of traffic congestion, air filters may get dirtier more quickly.

If a dirty air filter is not replaced, it can become clogged. A clogged air filter severely limits the amount of air making it to the engine. A clogged air filter may fail, allowing dirt and other contaminants into the engine. This will result in extremely poor performance, and may cause permanent damage to the engine.

What to expect:

A top-rated mobile mechanic will come to your home or office to determine the extent of the damage done by the clogged filter and provide a replacement. The mechanic will then provide a detailed inspection report outlining if any damage has been done by the clogged filter, and the cost of any repairs that need to be made.

How it's done:

A mechanic will first remove the air filter from its compartment in the engine bay to determine the extent of the clog and if there is any damage to other engine components. The mechanic should then provide a replacement filter and make sure that it fits well. A poorly fitting, or incorrect filter may allow large particles or other contaminants into the engine. When the new filter is installed, the mechanic should replace the cover and make sure that the filter is sealed well. When the replacement is complete, the mechanic should have you start the engine to check how it runs. If the engine struggles to run well after the new filter is installed, the mechanic may have to investigate if further damage has been done to the engine by the clogged filter. The mechanic will make sure that all necessary repairs have been made and the engine is running well before he or she leaves.

How important is this service?

A poorly running engine, or a vehicle that seems to be down on power may be suffering from a clogged air filter. A clogged air filter will only get worse over time and may cause further damage to the vehicle if it is not replaced. It is important to have your vehicle’s air filter replaced every 10,000 to 15,000 miles, or more often depending on if you live in an area with higher congestion. Your mechanic should help you determine how often your vehicle’s air filter should be replaced.

Scheduled to have a few items taken care of during this service visit. Richard took the time to advise me some services were unnecessary and recommended that I wait for another. This is the first time a mechanic has ever been this honest with me and recommended to wait for a service. I appreciate the approach and am committed to yourmechanic and their process.

I found Cesar to be professional and knowledgeable. He lets you know he wants to build a solid working relationship by making the customer happy with the completed job. I would hire him again. I would not say the same for the the company he works from. I found them not forthcoming with pricing and explanations. ASK lots of questions before booking. Services other companies offer free, they charge over and above.
