What are drive belts all about?

The drive belts are connected to the crankshaft (a part of the engine), as well as to the alternator, air conditioning, and power steering system. The belts are responsible for transferring power from the crankshaft to these other systems. Over time, and especially if multiple systems that put stress on the belts are being used, the belts can grow loose, or unaligned. When this happens the belts will need to be adjusted so that they can return to their normal, optimal position.

Keep in mind:

  • If the drive belt is at all frayed or cracked it should be replaced instead of adjusted.
  • When the drive belt is adjusted, the drive belt tensioner and idler pulley should both be inspected.

How it's done:

  • Adjust the drive belts

Our recommendation:

Your drive belts should always be checked during tuneups and maintenance. During any kind of servicing your drive belts should be checked to see if they need to be replaced or adjusted.

What is a common symptom indicating you need to adjust the drive belts?

  • Squealing noise from the engine

How important is this service?

Your alternator, power steering, and air conditioning are all powered by your drive belt. The belt is connected to the crankshaft, and transfers power to these systems. As the belt is used and wears, it can grow lose, or begin to become unaligned. If the drive belt becomes loose, it won’t move as efficiently, and it won’t transfer power as efficiently. If the belt becomes unaligned, it can come into contact with parts of the engine, which can cause damage.

Cadillac SRX V6-3.6L - Spark Plugs - Las Vegas, Nevada
My 2007 Cadillac SRX AWD V6 was pinging on acceleration, had lost engine pep and the gas mileage had dropped to about 10 miles per gallon. The car has 97,000 miles on it and Cadillac recommends changing spark plugs at 100,000 miles. I called Cadillac and got a quote of $ 550. Wow! I called your mechanic and got a quote for $ 299.00. I asked for Patrick, who I had used before. Patrick came and and did a pretty involved job disassembling the top of the engine to reach the spark plugs and replaced them in about 3 hours. Patrick noted that the old plugs were very worn and that the spark plug tubes and the spark tubes had oil at the bottom of them. He told me that might be because the seal at the bottom of the spark plug tubes had failed, allowing oil from inside the valve cover to get into the spark plug tubes. I did some research and found that these seals failing is a relatively common issue in SRX's as well as other vehicles. The seals are not expensive but it appears that to replace them, the top of the engine would need to be disassembled again plus the valve cover on each side would also have to be removed, Then the seals could be installed and everything reassembled. That's most likely an expensive job. I drove the car after the new plugs were installed. Quite a difference. The car has its pep back, the mileage is starting to rise back to normal levels, and although I still get a slight ping at times, at this point it is about 90 % less than I was getting. My question is if I do nothing about the spark plug tube seals, will my issues return? Notes about this indicate that at some point the spark plugs are fouled enough to cause engine error faults and misfires if the spark plug tube seals are not replaced. Now I have to decide if I want to spend the money to have the new seals installed or take my chances and see what happens. If you read this Patrick, I would appreciate your best guess. Patrick is a very good mechanic. My dad ran an auto parts store, a garage and a machine shop for 25 years so I do know a few things about cars and know a good mechanic when I see one. If you need an excellent mechanic who is also honest, look no further than Patrick.
