What is lubricating the trunk all about?

The trunk is a storage compartment usually located at the rear of the vehicle. This area is accessible via either a lid or a door. The hinges allowing the door to open and close smoothly need to remain lubricated in order to operate properly.

Keep in mind:

  • Trunk doors can be quite heavy, causing more wear and tear on the hinge attaching it to the vehicle.
  • Heavy trunk doors and lids can be extremely difficult to open if the hinges seize or jam.
  • Broken or bent hinges will not return to operating condition through lubrication alone, additional repairs are required.

How it's done:

  • Apply grease to the hinges and the latch.

Our recommendation:

At the first sign of noise or difficulty with opening or closing, lubricant should be applied to the hinges of a trunk door or lid. Before the application, the hinge or hinges should be inspected for damage or mechanical problems. While this is being done, we recommend that other hinges around the exterior of the vehicle be inspected and lubricated as well. If the lubricant on the hinges connecting the truck door or lid to the vehicle has depleted to the point of needing replacement, it is likely that other lubricated parts need servicing as well.

What are the common symptoms indicating you need to lubricate the trunk?

  • Opening or closing the trunk door or lid is more difficult than it once was.
  • A loud squeaking noise is heard when the trunk door or lid is opened or closed.
  • The trunk may not latch properly when closed.

How important is this service?

This service is moderately important, as trunk lids have a tendency to latch improperly or require multiple attempts at closing to stay shut. Not only is this very inconvenient, but the trunk could open while the vehicle is in motion. Regular lubrication will ensure smooth operation and prevent expensive repairs from being necessary in the future.

BMW Z3 L6-2.8L - Pre-purchase Car Inspection - Fayetteville, North Carolina
Great guy! Spoke with him before and after the inspection. He gave me valuable insight about the car and the dealership. Always get an inspection... not sure I will buy the car now but money well spent. I'll wait for the final report to make my decision. Thanks YourMechanic!

BMW 330Ci L6-3.0L - Fuel Pump - Fairfield, California
I was working out of town when my 2006 BMW 330CI Convertable failed to start. The closest BMW dealer was 20 miles away and a tow would have been costly so I went on line, found "Your Mechanic" and scheduled a time to meet with Gary. Gary was right on time, determined it was a fuel pump failure and scheduled a time the next day to install a new purmp. Gary included me in the process, explained his testing results, installed an OEM pump and showed me the old one; all at a very reasonable cost. He was pleasant, timely, and professional. I highly recommend Gary to anyone who is in need of a high quality, honest and professional car maintenance and repair service in the Faircfield area. I only wish I lived closer to use Gary as the mechanic for both of our cars.

BMW 335i L6-3.0L Turbo - Valve Cover Gasket - West Sacramento, California
Rodney had his work cut out for him with replacing both the valve cover and housing unit gaskets on my 335i coupe. I was a bit nervous having a new person touch my car. But he answered all my questions with confidence and showed me the old brittle gaskets afterwards. I felt confident in his abilities by his apparent knowledge of BMW's in general. Now that I've been driving the car for several weeks with no issues, I can confidently say that Rodney did fine work and I will certainly request him for any future work on my baby.
