Every passenger car or sport utility vehicle has a trunk or hatchback. These trunks or hatches are equipped with a keyed lock to prevent the theft of its contents and to secure access to the interior of the vehicle. Opening and closing the trunk or hatchback can sometimes be done by pressing a button inside the vehicle, although all vehicles have a key cylinder mounted on the trunk or hatch for manual operation. When the proper key is inserted into the trunk lock cylinder, turning the key a quarter turn clockwise will release the lock and the trunk or hatch will open. A spring on the trunk lock cylinder will return the key to its closed position when it is released. The latch on the trunk can be closed with the key removed from the cylinder or turned back to the locked position.
The trunk lock cylinder is verified to be broken. The trunk inside trim panel is removed and the latch is removed for access to the lock cylinder.
The lock cylinder retaining clip is removed and the broken lock cylinder is removed from the trunk.
The new trunk lock cylinder is installed into the trunk hole and secured in place with the clip. The latch is reinstalled and secured.
The trunk lock cylinder is tested for proper operation and the inside trim panels are reinstalled.
The trunk lid is opened and closed to check the latch and lock cylinder operation.
Your trunk lock cylinder should be replaced if the key no longer goes into the cylinder, works to turn the cylinder or if it doesn’t return to the locked position easily. Use lock de-icer in the winter to prevent the lock from freezing up.
The trunk lock cylinder protects the contents of your trunk or hatch, and serves as an emergency entry or exit point for some vehicles. If the lock cylinder seizes, you may be unable to access your belongings or gain entry into your vehicle in an emergency. Replace the trunk lock cylinder to prevent this inconvenience.
