You need to know what your transmission is doing once you move the shifter. For those with a console shifter, the readout is usually down to your right, beside the gearshift assembly. It’s the shift indicator cable’s job to make sure the readout on the gearshift indicator is representative of what your transmission has been directed to do. The cable is usually separate from the shift selector cable, though they work in tandem. If the shift indicator cable is stretched or broken, the shift indicator will not display the right gear.
The shift indicator cable is a non-serviceable part. If you find your gearshift indicator doesn’t line up with the gear your transmission is actually in, have one of our expert mechanics inspect and replace the shift selector cable.
If the shift indicator isn’t working properly, you could easily hurt someone if a gear other than the one on display is active.
