Engine coolant is required to keep your engine at optimum operating temperature. It begins circulation from the radiator, passes through the engine, then back to the radiator. The hoses that connect the radiator to the engine are just as essential as the radiator, the cooling fans, the reservoir, and the water pump.
The upper hose connects to the thermostat housing and the upper portion of the radiator. Heated coolant enters through here and flows down the radiator to the bottom, cooling off as it descends. Once at the bottom, it routes back out of the radiator through the lower radiator hose. This connects to the water pump inlet, called the lower radiator hose housing, which bolts to the side of the block while providing a nipple for the radiator hose to clamp around.
While the lower radiator hose housing is designed to last the life of the vehicle, it can be damaged. Corrosion is the primary cause, but high heat significantly contributes to its deterioration as well.
While the lower radiator hose housing isn’t the most technologically advanced automotive component, it serves an essential purpose of providing a pathway in which coolant can re-enter the engine. If the housing is cracked or otherwise damaged, the engine will operate at high, damaging temperatures. Have damaged housing replaced immediately by one of our expert mechanics.
Maintaining the right operating temperature in your engine is essential for its longevity and functionality. If the lower radiator hose housing is damaged and leaking, you’re in danger of overheating your engine. Have a one of our expert mechanics diagnose your vehicle and replace the housing if necessary.
