Your hydrostatic fan is part of the fan clutch assembly, which works to turn your fan on and off, depending on whether you need more or less cooling air going to your radiator. When it operates normally, it will vary the speed of the air going to your engine regardless of the engine speed. When you are cruising down the road at freeway speed, the hydrostatic fan will just idle a bit and deliver a small amount of air flow. When you reduce your speed, the clutch will sense the higher engine temperature and increase the fan speed. Normal hydrostatic fan operation is essential to the process of cooling your engine when needed.
The hydrostatic fan is not part of a regular checkup or scheduled maintenance. If you suspect that there is a problem with your hydrostatic fan, ask one of our expert mechanics to diagnose the issue and replace the hydrostatic fan if necessary.
If your engine is overheating, have your vehicle looked at immediately. An overheated engine can cause innumerable problems, the worst of which is a cracked engine block. If this happens, you’ll be looking at a full motor replacement. You should never continue to operate your car if the engine seems to be overheating, and should definitely stop if it approaches the “red line.” If you suspect the hydrostatic fan is faulty, have one of our expert mechanics diagnose why your car is overheating, and if necessary, replace the hydrostatic fan.
