In order for your car’s hood to remain securely closed while you’re driving, a latch is used. Because the hood latch does not have an exterior release, a release cable is used. The cable runs from the front of the hood through the engine compartment, the firewall between the cabin and the engine bay, and finally to the back of the hood latch release located in the driver side foot below the steering wheel and above the brake and gas pedals.
Ideally, your hood latch release cable will last the life of the car. However, that’s not always the case, as the cable can break at any point, mostly commonly at the release point inside the cabin. The second most common break location is the latch at the front of the car. In most of these instances, the cable will slide out of reach or the break will leave it too short to be used. Replacing it requires a significant amount of labor and expertise in routing the cable from the latch to the release handle. Have one of our expert mechanics replace your hood latch release cable if it is broken.
While driving your car without an operable release cable will not damage your vehicle, access to the engine is vital for many different types of regular maintenance. If your release cable has broken, you should have it replaced promptly.
