The suspension height sensor is the component in your vehicle that tells it that it’s at the height that was approved for it when it left the factory. When you add weight to your vehicle, the height sensor tells your vehicle that it’s over weight, and adjusts accordingly by releasing or adding air to the air shocks or air spring bags. An on-board computer in your vehicle determines how air pressure will be delivered in order to compensate for additional load. There are height sensors on all four corners of your vehicle that deliver information to the main suspension height sensor.
Your vehicle is also equipped with air springs that provide you with a smooth ride and raise the body of the vehicle to provide more clearance when you’re carrying a load.
An overloaded vehicle can cause similar problems as a failing suspension height sensor. Your on-board computer can lower your vehicle or raise it to accommodate the size and weight of your load. If your suspension height doesn’t seem to be proper or you suspect a height sensor problem, have one of our expert mechanics inspect and replace the suspension height sensor.
While suspension height failure is not common, it is possible. It won’t affect your vehicle’s operation in any critical manner, though you should have it replaced if it’s faulty.
