The heating system in the car consists of the heater core and blower motor. Without both properly functioning, the car will not produce any hot air. The heater core is located inside the car on the passenger side compartment, underneath the dashboard. Coolant from the engine flows through the heater core. The blower motor blows air across the heater core filled with hot coolant. The air absorbs the heat from the coolant and escapes from the heater vents providing warm air. If the heater core becomes clogged or if it starts leaking, the coolant will not be able to flow through it. In that case, the heater will not work (car will not get any hot air). A clogged or leaking heater core cannot be fixed. It needs to be replaced.
Follow the service maintenance schedule provided by the manufacturer to get the coolant replaced at regular intervals. It is a good practice to change the coolant every 25,000 - 40,000 miles. Replacing the coolant will ensure it is free of contaminants such as rust and scale that can block the flow of coolant through the heater core.
To ensure proper operation of the heating and cooling system you need to have a functioning heater core. Furthermore, if a leaking heater core is left unattended, over time your carpet will become contaminated with coolant and the vehicles floor will start to corrode.
