Engines need clean fuel to operate at their peak performance. Dirty fuel robs an engine of its ability to accelerate, causes misfires, and can cause a vehicle to stall or not start. The fuel filter removes debris from the fuel that has deposited in the fuel tank when filling up, and stores it until the fuel filter is replaced. It prevents dirt from reaching the engine where it can clog injectors, impede proper combustion in the cylinder, and leave deposits on internal engine components.
The vehicle is raised and supported on jack stands. The auxiliary fuel filter is located.
A drain pan is put under the filter. The quick disconnect line locks are removed and the lines and filter are removed from the mount.
The new fuel filter is installed into the mount and tightened. The fuel lines are pushed onto the filter till the lock engages. The lock clips are installed and the filter is checked for leaks.
The vehicle is lowered off the jack stands. The vehicle is started and double checked for leaks.
The vehicle is road tested for proper operation.
Replace the fuel filter at the manufacturer’s recommended interval. Most car makers recommend replacement every 10,000 miles, or every year, whichever comes first.
The fuel filter should be replaced at its regular interval to prevent running problems, and in severe cases, stalling while driving.
