The front output shaft oil seal is a circular type of gasket that prevents transfer case oil from leaking out around your oil shaft. It is used on all-wheel drive and four-wheel drive vehicles. The driveshaft that goes to the front differential has a slip yoke that goes on the output shaft from the transfer case, and it needs to be sealed to prevent fluid escaping. The gasket is pressed onto the transfer case to complete the seal. The front output shaft oil seal can leak due to wear over time, or the seal can be nicked from dirt and debris that can get stuck to the drive shaft slip yoke.
The front output shaft seal is only replaced as needed since there is no set interval for maintenance or repair. If you suspect the output shaft seal is leaking, have it diagnosed by one of our expert mechanics.
Any time transfer case fluid is leaking, you can be running the risk of damaged components. Worst-case scenario, you could even end up having to replace the transfer case. Don’t wait too long if the front output shaft oil seal needs to be replaced.
