A vehicle’s exhaust system is a long, rigid metal system that bolts onto the back end of the engine. A long tube such as the exhaust pipe would be subject to fatigue and cracking if it was suspended without some sort of device to dampen the vibration.
In addition, noise and vibration from the exhaust system would transfer into the passenger compartment if the exhaust pipe was mounted rigidly to the undercarriage. Rubber mounts, known as the exhaust system or exhaust pipe hangers, connect the exhaust pipe to the undercarriage. They isolate the exhaust pipe so vibrations don’t cause metal fatigue and cracking. They also prevent the drone of exhaust vibrations from reverberating inside the passenger compartment.
If the exhaust hangers crack or break due to weathering or age, the exhaust system can hang low and put undue pressure on joints and pipes, causing fractures or bends that can otherwise be prevented.
The exhaust hanger is rubber and will eventually need to be replaced due to weathering, though not at any specific interval. The exhaust hangers should be inspected whenever a comprehensive vehicle checkup is performed. If your exhaust pipe is hanging down, or if your exhaust hanger is torn or broken, have one of our expert technicians replace it.
A broken exhaust system hanger puts additional stress on other exhaust components from the muffler to the exhaust manifold studs. If left unrepaired, it can lead to damage to other exhaust components on your vehicle, creating a noisy exhaust leak. A broken exhaust system hanger can also cause the exhaust pipe to hang so low that damage occurs to the exhaust tailpipe or muffler. Repair a broken or weathered exhaust hanger as soon as possible.
