Your car’s air conditioning system is actually very complex, and is comprised of a number of essential components. One of the most crucial parts is the AC thermistor. Thermistors are used in all air conditioning applications, from your car to the refrigerator in your home. Essentially, they monitor temperature and control the operation of the system. They work on the basis of resistance – the thermistor’s resistance reduces as heat increases, which allows the car’s air conditioning to cool properly.
Thermistors are sensitive to a wide range of factors, including jostling, dirt and debris. Even a coating of dust can compromise operation and throw off the thermistor’s readings. When this happens, your air conditioner will not work properly. The most common problem is a lack of cooling – the system blows cool air, but will not get cold.
When you turn on your air conditioning, you expect it to blow cold air for as long as necessary, but if your thermistor is malfunctioning, it might blow cold only for a little while, or not at all. Have any AC malfunction or erroneous operation professionally diagnosed by one of our expert mechanics, and replace the AC thermistor if necessary.
While having a working air conditioner isn’t essential to vehicle operation, it is an important convenience feature, particularly during the summer months. Thermistor malfunctions can compromise operation and mimic many other conditions, including low refrigerant. Have a faulty AC thermistor replaced as soon as it is practical.
