Clunking noises are annoying and potentially dangerous, and should always be investigated. They vary from relatively harmless hubcap rattles to more serious issues with suspension and steering components. Unfortunately, there are many possible sources, and some are hard to locate with the vehicle stationary. A test drive is nearly always required.

Worn shocks and struts often produce noises, and their state of wear should be obvious from a profound lack of damping, allowing noticeable rocking and bouncing motions when the car is moving or a pronounced clunk whenever going over bumps.

Engine mounts can wear and allow engine movement – and noise – during power off and on transitions; but not so much over bumps. Steering components, however, can produce noise over bumps, and these can be checked by turning the wheel vigorously from side to side while the car is stationary.

There are rubber bushings fitted at sway-bar and control arm mounts, and these can wear and allow slop and noise to develop. One way of finding control-arm bushing wear is to apply the car’s brakes firmly with the engine idling, then cycle the transmission from Park through Drive to reverse repeatedly while listening for noises.

Common reasons for this to happen:

  • Worn out struts
  • Worn out strut mounts
  • Worn out control-arm bushing

How it's done:

The mechanic will inspect the entire front suspension system and likely test drive the car.

How important is this service?

Since the causes of undercarriage noises are many and varied, and because there may be rust or mechanical damage at the root of this problem, we strongly suggest that you have the car inspected by an expert technician as soon as possible.

Augustine was excellent! I'm a woman who is somewhat versed with the mechanics of the car. I know enough to know when I'm getting bamboozled. Well, after taking my car into the dealership and having them tell me I would have to pay $5,000 for a whole new transmission when my car only has 42,000 miles on it I called this company. It was refreshing to actually talk to Augustine instead of someone just speaking to me. When he first came here, right away he informed me that the quote will be less because he found some parts that are of the same value but for less money. He was very thorough and extremely courteous. Answered all my questions and finished the work in a very professional manner. Oh, one thing I forgot to mention is that he noticed I was running really low on power steering fluid and told me which kind to pick up. Very thoughtful of him!

I have a 2003 Chevy Tahoe four-wheel drive I noticed a vibration in my steering wheel and as and if I make a sharp turn it feels like it's sticking like click click click click and it's hard for me to go forward

I have a 2009 Lincon Town Car that has 132000 mi. on it. It sat in driveway for 3 years. I decided to start driving it again it is in excellent condition. I had brand new tires put on, oil changed with STP. Coolant added, not much, and everything else checked. I drove it 60 miles round trip with no problem. Put $20.00 unleaded gas which brought up to a half tank. I get 28 miles per gallon. On the way home my steering wheel started vibrating at 60mph. Some lights came on on dashboard 1 shaped like a car with skids under it, than one shaped like a I needed to change oil which I had just done. When I pulled in driveway shut off car it continued to run. I opened hood there is a little square hard steel shaped box centered in front of steering wheel with 4 or 5 steel lines running from it and all were extremely hot. The car ran for 30 minutes than stopped. I am very perplexed. Female 45 and know nothing about engines. But I love Baby! She is the best car I ever owned! The reason we quit driving her because of the gas mileage. But my boyfriend had a stroke and I had an Dodge Avenger I hated! I could please use som RSS help.
