Unusual and abnormal wear on the treading of your tires is never a good thing. It suggests that your wheels are not making proper contact with the road, and it is also a sign that your tires will have a shorter lifespan and are likely to blow out. Anytime you notice abnormal wear on the treading of your tires, you should immediately schedule an inspection with a mechanic. Feathering occurs when the tire is subject to angled wear and tear, and as such, one side of the tread will be sharp, and the other side will be rounded.

How this system works:

Tires are designed to be at a certain angle with regards to the road. Both the vertical and the horizontal angles are necessary for optimal wear and tear, and for the best driving experience. When one of these angles becomes out of line (such as when the bottom of the tire sticks too far out or too far in, or the front of the tire points too far out or too far in), the car will not drive as smoothly, the tires will not make even, consistent contact with the road, and abnormal wear and tear will occur.

Common reasons for this to happen:

There are two primary causes for feathering of tires:

  • Poorly aligned wheels: If your wheels are not aligned properly, the tires will wear in abnormal and harmful ways. A proper alignment sets the wheels on both a vertical and horizontal axis. When the front of the wheels are pointed too far in (called “toe-in”), feathering on the tread of the tires will occur quickly. Misalignment can be naturally occurring, as the result of an accumulation of miles. It can also be the result of a tire change or tire rotation in which the mechanic did not do a great job.

  • Faulty suspension: Feathering on the tires is always the cause of a toe-in misalignment. However, this misalignment is often due to a larger problem with the suspension. The suspension is what connects the body of the car to the wheels, and is responsible for the vehicle running smoothly. The shock absorbers, struts, and springs all help absorb the impact of the road, so that the vehicle does not have too much stress on the wheels, while the control arms and ball joints help the wheels turn and work in cohesion. If any of these components fails, large amounts of stress will fall on the wheels, which can force them into a misalignment.

What to expect:

A top-rated mobile mechanic will come to your home or office to determine the cause of the feathering of your tires, and will then provide a detailed inspection report that includes the scope and cost of the necessary repairs.

How it's done:

A mechanic will give your suspension system a thorough inspection, to determine whether the misalignment is the result of a larger issue within the vehicle. If they find a problem with the shock absorbers, struts, springs, control arms, or ball joints, then they will replace the broken component before you get your wheels aligned.

How important is this service?

Tires are one of the most vital components of your vehicle. Abnormal wear and tear needs to be handled immediately, because it greatly decreases the lifespan of your tires, and puts you at greater risk for having your tires pop. It also decreases your control of the vehicle. However, when you have feathering in your tire, you should always schedule an inspection, and not just have the tire replaced and the wheels aligned. A feathered tire often indicates a more serious problem with the suspension, and that should not be ignored.

Toyota Sequoia V8-4.7L - rear latch handle - Schertz, Texas
Charles arrived on time and got right to work on replacing the broken lift gate handle on my 2006 Toyota Sequoia. It was cold that day and not an easy job to get the lift gate open, but he was successful in replacing the handle, getting everything back together and now it works great. I was very pleased with the professional level of service.

Toyota Corolla L4-1.8L - Serpentine/Drive Belt - National City, California
Tabitha was a little earlier but that was OK with me. She did an excellent job in replacing the Serpentine drive belt, drive belt tensioner and drive belt pulley. Oil , oil filter, oil pan drain gasket were replaced. Air filter was replaced. All that within 2 1/2 hours. Tabitha checked the computer since my check engine light came on three weeks ago but went off again within two weeks. No errors were found but Tabitha explained that prior a vacuum issue was reported. She explained that this could have been a gas cap not properly mounted. This made sense since I remember the gas tank cap being on crooked a while ago. The price matched the quote and overall I am very satisfied with her work!

Toyota Corolla L4-1.8L - Car is hesitating and bucking - Las Vegas, Nevada
I am not a happy camper. I have already had (service?) Once. Dave came to check out my car for a guarantee check as I supposedly had it fixed two days ago by Paul.(Brad) . The first mechanic(Brad) gave the $70 inspection and then an estimate of repairs. That was fine. I made an appointment. I was pleased. He came to my home, so far, good. The estimate was $700. That was fine. He finished within an hour. I thought this was great. The bill was only $310. That was a nice surprise too. However the very next day the SAME thing happened to my car and I was yet again stuck in traffic. So far this has cost me personally over $500 and I DO NOT have a car. I had to rent one for my doctor appointment. Another $100. Apparently Paul (Brad) put in my car a hydraulic brake booster. I am going to mention all the things I expected. The car needed an engine mount replacement, transmission mount replacement, oil change, brake flush and fluid, coolant, cleaner, (of course, my AC wasn't working either. Also replacement of a radiator cap. By the way I had a radiator cap. Do you see anything on this list of a hydraulic brake booster? NO . Should I be upset? YES. I am out 600 AND a car. I expect a full refund and I don't think I can trust anyone in this company again. It's a shame because I did like them and it's a good idea for a MOBILE unit. This is no reflection on Dave in any way. He couldn't fix what he didn't know. He also could not pop my hood. He had to take off a piece of something in front and do it by hand. Then he found a lug nut wrench in my engine. Are you kidding me? No. However, he drove my car around my parking lot. He should have taken it out in TRAFFIC and stoplights. I wouldn't let him because he was alone and I KNEW if he did he would get stuck. IM THE GOOD GUY!!!!!! Thanks for nothing. I am a retired senior citizen without a car. I will give them one more day to fix this situation one way or another or I have no choice but to go to channel 13 investigations and have them check this out. I am too tired. Thanks for nothing. Will the third time be the charm? Will my car get fixed? Will I get $300 credit if they fix it? Stay tuned.
