What is the parking brake cable all about?

The parking brake (also known as emergency brake) cable is a steel cable that is very thin. It connects the parking brake lever to the parking brake shoes. When you activate the parking brake, the cable pulls on the parking brake shoes, which causes them to clamp onto the brake drum or rotor. If the parking brake cable gets too much slack, the parking brake won’t work, and the cable will need to be adjusted.

Keep in mind:

  • After adjusting the parking brake cable, the parking brake should always be tested.
  • When the parking cable is adjusted it should be inspected to see if it needs to be replaced.

How it's done:

  • Adjust parking brake cable
  • Check the parking brake

Our recommendation:

The brake system is the most important part of your vehicle, but sometimes the parking brake is overlooked. Your parking brake cable should be inspected during all maintenance and servicing. If you ever notice that your vehicle’s parking break isn’t working effectively or at all, then you should schedule an inspection immediately.

What are the common symptoms indicating you need to adjust the parking brake cable?

  • Parking brake does not work
  • Parking brake lever is easy to push

How important is this service?

Your parking brake shoes are connected to the parking brake lever by the parking brake cable. When you deploy the parking brake lever, the parking brake cable is pulled taut. This pulls on the parking brake shoes, and causes them to clamp on the rear brake drums or rotors. This clamping causing keeps your wheels from being able to move, and secures your car when it is parked. If the parking brake cable becomes too loose, then the tension created by pulling the parking brake lever isn’t enough to move the parking brake shoes. As a result, when you pull the parking brake lever, the parking brake will not work effectively.

Hyundai Sonata L4-2.4L - Intake Manifold Gaskets - Morrisville, North Carolina
Hans showed up to do a repair (not maintenance) that the dealer diagnosed and recommended. Beforehand, he asked questions about how the car had been acting and how I narrowed it down to that part, to make sure I hadn't been misled. He also had to order the part, and communicated thoroughly when he was worried it hadn't showed up in time (he had to make an extra stop on his way to me). Once there, he finished the appointment in the allotted time. He also diagnosed some squeaks/creaks (that would not be cost-effective to fix), as well as noise under acceleration and a minor oil leak. He also told me my oil was getting low and that I should get it changed ASAP, even though he was booked up. (These car people have to keep me in line sometimes!)

Hyundai Accent L4-1.6L - Oil Change - Martinez, California
Joshua was so helpful with changing my oil and filter. He came straight to my house, 15 mins earlier than the appointment time and got straight to work. He has a super friendly demeanor, and is very knowledgeable about cars. He answered all my questions without even a hint of irritation. He even gave me some extra information about when to check my engine oil and confirmed my suspicions that it does in fact evaporate over time!! He even went into the reason why! You can tell he loves his work! Not only that but he made sure to spend extra time on my car to make sure he checked everything properly, he was in no rush to get done with my car. But to give it the best service it could have. Honestly I wouldn't trust anyone else with my car, ever again. I will definitely be having Joshua come back and work on my car again. He's even given me quotes on some of the things that need fixing in the future!! I have and will continue to recommend him to my family and friends!
