What are drive belts all about?

The drive belts are connected to the crankshaft (a part of the engine), as well as to the alternator, air conditioning, and power steering system. The belts are responsible for transferring power from the crankshaft to these other systems. Over time, and especially if multiple systems that put stress on the belts are being used, the belts can grow loose, or unaligned. When this happens the belts will need to be adjusted so that they can return to their normal, optimal position.

Keep in mind:

  • If the drive belt is at all frayed or cracked it should be replaced instead of adjusted.
  • When the drive belt is adjusted, the drive belt tensioner and idler pulley should both be inspected.

How it's done:

  • Adjust the drive belts

Our recommendation:

Your drive belts should always be checked during tuneups and maintenance. During any kind of servicing your drive belts should be checked to see if they need to be replaced or adjusted.

What is a common symptom indicating you need to adjust the drive belts?

  • Squealing noise from the engine

How important is this service?

Your alternator, power steering, and air conditioning are all powered by your drive belt. The belt is connected to the crankshaft, and transfers power to these systems. As the belt is used and wears, it can grow lose, or begin to become unaligned. If the drive belt becomes loose, it won’t move as efficiently, and it won’t transfer power as efficiently. If the belt becomes unaligned, it can come into contact with parts of the engine, which can cause damage.

Russell stopped what he was working on in order to come and put on my serpentine belt in the freezing cold but he was quick and accurate in finding the right way to do the work for me. He showed his skills as a mechanic quickly and fixed my car for me in pretty short order. He was very polite, professional and I will ask for him now whenever I have a problem with my car that I can't fix.

I had the blower motor replaced, it worked for the last week. Today the fans were kicking on and off then off completely.

This may be related to a faulty blower motor or blower motor relay. Occasionally, the blower motor itself will wear out or become faulty working intermittently as the brush contacts inside the motor wear out. Vw passat 1999 1.8 t has loss of power. Won't go over 40 mpg. Or over 3000 rpm unless first started. I have replaced mass air flow sensor, the turbo, exhaust and intake manifold gaskets, the fuel filter, replaced crankshaft breather assembly, changed spark plugs, ran lucas fuel cleaner through it, cleaned top end of motor, tested fuel pressure--55 psi at idle, 60 psi at acceleration, only ran 91 octane fuel and octane boost helps but doesn't eliminate problem. Slow to accelerate, no power for even slightly steep climbs. Was misfiring cylinder 1 but after spark plugs replacement no longer misfiring. Have not replaced air/fuel regulator sensor or fuel sock in tank.
