How to Replace a Lost or Stolen Car Title in Virginia

Losing things is nothing new for most people. It's hard to keep track of our various possessions, and outside of losing them unfortunately sometimes things are stolen. Your car title is one of those items that are notorious for getting lost, or even stolen. Unfortunately, this is a pretty big deal once it's gone because that is proof you own your car. This is important if you happen to be using your car as collateral for some sort of loan, if you want to transfer its ownership, or you are trying to sell it.

In the state of Virginia if you happen to lose or have your car title stolen, you can obtain a duplicate title through the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). They have made the process to be very straight-forward so that it doesn’t have to be a big ordeal. You can apply in person, or online for your duplicate title. Here's a look at the steps.

In person

  • Begin by filling out the Application for Supplemental and Transfer Liens or Replacement and Substitute Titles (Form VSA 66).

  • Bring this completed form to your local DMV customer service center. Be sure to also bring information about a lien if one exists, your Social Security number, photo ID or your license, and your registration certificate.

  • You will be required to pay a $10 fee for the title.

Online

  • Should you opt to apply for your duplicate title online, you will need a few pieces of information. You'll need to enter in your date of birth, your customer number, your PIN number, and there is a $10 fee, which can be paid using a credit card.

You can find more information about replacing a lost or stolen car title in Virginia by visiting the state’s Department of Motor Vehicles site.
